The publication of these four essays adds much to our knowledge and appreciation of the wide range of Schutz’s phenomenological and sociological interests. Originally published in 1987. The essays consist of: a challenging presentation of a phenomenology of cognition and a treatment of Bergson’s conceptions of images, duration, space time and memory; a discussion of the meanings connected with the grammatical forms of language in general; a consideration of the relation between meaning-contents and literary forms in poetry, literary prose narration and dramatic presentation; and an examination of resemblances and differences in the inner forms and characteristics of the major theatrical art forms.

This volume was first published by Inter-Disciplinary Press in 2016. If, indeed, ‘Vision is the art of seeing what is invisible to others,’ as Jonathan Swift has so famously phrased it, then visual literacy is the art of translating the seen – through image, word and gesture – so that the invisible can be made visible to others. In other words, visual literacy specifies a process of articulation that employs both sight and insight in the service of interpreting the language of the image, reading the narrative of the graphic, and deciphering the codes and modes of the visual. This volume represents an attempt to convey some of the many ideas surrounding visual literacy and advance the interdisciplinary field of visual literacy studies toward new areas of research and inquiry.

When the stakes of public words and actions are global and permanent, and especially when they involve war and peace, can we afford not to seek their meaning? For three decades, Francis Beer has pioneered the effort to discover, describe, and connect pieces of the complex puzzle of war, peace, their interrelationship, and their causes. In this volume, Beer (joined by colleagues as co-authors of some chapters) examines the cognitive, behavioral, and linguistic dimensions of war and peace. Language, he shows, is important because it mediates between thought and action. It expresses beliefs about war and peace and affects the perceptions of potential adversaries about one's own intentions.
