Degeneration of nerve cells that control cognitive, speech, and language processes leading to linguistic impairments at various levels, from verbal utterances to individual speech sounds, could indicate signs of neurological, cognitive and psychiatric disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD), Parkinson’s disease (PD), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), dementias, depression, autism spectrum disorder, schizophrenia, etc. Currently, these disorders are diagnosed using specific clinical diagnostic criteria and neuropsychological examinations. However, speech-based biomarkers could potentially offer many advantages over current clinical standards. In addition to being objective and naturalistic, they can also be collected remotely with minimal instruction and time requirements. Furthermore, Machine Learning algorithms developed to build automated diagnostic models using linguistic features extracted from speech could aid diagnosis of patients with probable diseases from a group of normal population. To ensure that speech-based biomarkers are providing accurate measurement and can serve as effective clinical tools for detecting and monitoring disease, speech features extracted and analyzed must be systematically and rigorously evaluated. Different machine learning architectures trained to classify different types of disordered speech must also be rigorously tested and systematically compared.

Getting the right diagnosis is a key aspect of health care - it provides an explanation of a patient's health problem and informs subsequent health care decisions. The diagnostic process is a complex, collaborative activity that involves clinical reasoning and information gathering to determine a patient's health problem. According to Improving Diagnosis in Health Care, diagnostic errors-inaccurate or delayed diagnoses-persist throughout all settings of care and continue to harm an unacceptable number of patients. It is likely that most people will experience at least one diagnostic error in their lifetime, sometimes with devastating consequences. Brain imaging has been successfully used to generate image-based biomarkers for various neurological and psychiatric disorders, such as Alzheimer’s and related dementias, Parkinson’s disease, stroke, traumatic brain injury, brain tumors, depression, schizophrenia, etc. However, accurate brain image-based diagnosis at the individual level remains elusive, and this applies to the diagnosis of neuropathological diseases as well as clinical syndromes. In recent years, deep learning techniques, due to their ability to learn complex patterns from large amounts of data, have had remarkable success in various fields, such as computer vision and natural language processing. Applying deep learning methods to brain imaging-assisted diagnosis, while promising, is facing challenges such as insufficiently labeled data, difficulty in interpreting diagnosis results, variations in data acquisition in multi-site projects, integration of multimodal data, clinical heterogeneity, etc. The goal of this research topic is to gather cutting-edge research that showcases the application of deep learning methods in brain imaging for the diagnosis of neurological and psychiatric disorders.
