Since 2006, international student enrollment in U.S. higher education institutions has increased significantly, which has precipitated an increase in the institutions' multiculturalism. A mechanism to facilitate the integration of students of different cultures within a multicultural institution would be valuable to fostering positive educational experiences for all students. The purpose of this phenomenological study was the inclusion of multiculturalism within U.S. higher education institutions. Banks' multiculturalism theory provided the study's conceptual framework. Six international students were interviewed, and their responses were analyzed to answer 2 research questions concerning the lived experiences of international students enrolled in U.S. higher education institutions and the inclusion of multiculturalism in the institution's curriculum, programs, policies, and practices and regarding their institutions' efforts to assist them in adjusting to and integrating. Data were analyzed to identify the emerging themes. According to the study's findings, multiculturalism was included in most of the participants' higher education institutions; however, the students felt their expectations had not been met, and that the institutions could have done more to assist them with cultural and social integration and navigation through the institutions' educational systems. The findings of this study create an opportunity for social change by informing U.S. higher education institutions on the ways to enhance programs, service, and curriculum to best meet the needs of enrolled international students.

Prior research has noted the changing demographics of higher education since the Civil Rights Movement and the expanded need for multicultural education. Armando Hernandez Morales (2003) wrote that, "A multiculturally competent person is aware of and knowledgeable about cultural differences, their own cultural identity, and the history and contemporary struggles of marginalized groups" (Morales, retrieved 2005). This study adds to the field by examining the life experiences that led to the development of multicultural competence in student affairs professionals using a qualitative research method. Seven co-researchers were selected from a pool of 17 adults who were currently working or had recently worked in student affairs and who had been nominated by their peers for demonstrating multicultural competencies. Each of the co-researchers was posed with five prompts. The co-researchers' responses were recorded, transcribed, reviewed by the co-researcher, and then analyzed using phenomenology, a qualitative research method outlined by Moustakas (1994). The first step in this process was the Epoche, where the researcher disclosed her personal relationship to the questions. Themes from the interviews were clustered into 14 themes that were then categorized into three realms: personal, professional, and structural/institutional. The research concluded, within the personal realm, that the development of multicultural competence begins with a personal awareness of one's own multicultural background and an internal motivation for self-improvement. Within the professional realm, in addition to continual training, it is necessary to operate under a shared vision and philosophy, and develop effective communication channels between departments. Finally, in the structural realm, leadership must act under a set of guiding principles that value diversity and equity, and that require the development of multicultural competencies. This study adds a qualitative perspective to the field of multicultural competence, illuminates the role of student affairs in this field, suggests ways to support graduate training programs develop these skills in student affairs professionals, and demonstrates the significance of personal background as the foundation of multicultural competence.

The purpose of this study was to better understand and describe the lived experiences of the nursing staff at a large palliative care facility in Toronto when working with terminally ill patients from diverse ethno/racial background. A phenomenological approach was chosen. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews with twelve nurses. The themes identified were: the importance of a patient's culture at end-of-life, the challenges of cross cultural palliative care, the skills to meet those challenges, the relevance of education and training in this setting, and the nurses' personal feelings of comfort with culture. The interrelated themes illustrated the nurses' experience of caring for culturally diverse patient populations. Implications for social work and nursing practice are found in the importance of role comprehension for interdisciplinary team functioning. Implications for future research include the need to study the experiences of each team member to foster a more comprehensive depiction of cross-cultural palliative care. The study was limited by its sample size and in the inexperience of the researcher. However, this phenomenological study should be seen as a contribution to the ongoing effort of understanding the lived experiences of palliative care professionals.
