This thesis presents the results of two searches for long-lived, weakly-interacting neutral particles. These searches are performed with 22.1/fb−1 of proton-proton collision data collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The first search is for events with a single displaced muon spectrometer (MS) vertex and two, high-energy jets. The second search is for events with two displaced MS vertices, requiring no prompt activity. The individual power of these searches depends on the model they are being applied to, and two models are studied: Stealth Supersymmetry, and Standard Model Higgs boson decays to long-lived, neutral scalars. The former model is studied in the context of both searches, while the latter is only studied in the two displaced MS vertex search. No excess of events over the expected background is found in either search, so 95% confidence level limits are set. For Stealth Supersymmetry, limits are also presented for the combination of the two studied topologies.

This analysis is a search for events with two displaced vertices reconstructed from the decay of pair-produced neutral, weakly-interacting, long-lived particles using the muon spectrometer of the ATLAS detector. The search uses a model-independent strategy, and employs a custom trigger for reconstructing displaced hadronic jets in the muon spectrometer with 139 fb-1 of pp collision data at [square root of]s=13 TeV collected in Run 2 at the LHC. The results are interpreted in terms of a Higgs scalar portal model, which probes the existence of a hidden sector that weakly couples to the Standard Model. The search observed 0 events in the signal region, which is compatible with the expected background of 0.32 ± 0.05 events. Limits were set on long-lived particle lifetime for all simulated signal mass points. For the Higgs boson with a mass of 125 GeV, the analysis reports the first exclusion limits for branching fractions into neutral long-lived particles below 0.1%, while branching fractions above 10% are excluded at 95% confidence level for long-lived particle proper lifetimes ranging from 4 cm to 72.4 m. In addition, the analysis presents the first results for the decay of long-lived particles into tt ̅ in the ATLAS muon spectrometer.

This thesis presents a search for long-lived particles decaying into displaced electrons and/or muons with large impact parameters. This signature provides unique sensitivity to the production of theoretical lepton-partners, sleptons. These particles are a feature of supersymmetric theories, which seek to address unanswered questions in nature. The signature searched for in this thesis is difficult to identify, and in fact, this is the first time it has been probed at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). It covers a long-standing gap in coverage of possible new physics signatures. This thesis describes the special reconstruction and identification algorithms used to select leptons with large impact parameters and the details of the background estimation. The results are consistent with background, so limits on slepton masses and lifetimes in this model are calculated at 95% CL, drastically improving on the previous best limits from the Large Electron Positron Collider (LEP).

Abstract: The existence of long-lived particles (LLPs) is a common feature in many theories beyond the Standard Model. For example, models with small couplings (i.e. R-parity-violating supersymmetry) and models allowing for decays via highly virtual intermediate states (i.e. Split supersymmetry) predict the presence of LLPs. With lifetimes ranging from picoseconds to nanoseconds, massive LLPs could decay to several electrically charged particles in the inner tracking volume of the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider, resulting in the reconstruction of a displaced secondary vertex. This thesis presents the first search for high mass, multi-track displaced vertices and multiple energetic jets using the full Run-2 dataset collected by the ATLAS detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb−1 at s√=13 TeV. The observed event yields are compatible with those expected from background processes. The results are presented as exclusion limits at 95 % confidence level on supersymmetric scenarios with non-zero R-parity violating couplings. This thesis also presents the ATLAS FastTracKer (FTK), which is a hardware-based track finder envisioned to be integrated into the ATLAS trigger system. The trigger system is responsible for selecting interesting events with a high purity at a rate of only 1 kHz. The FTK was designed to provide tracking information of all charged particles with pT>1 GeV in the ATLAS inner detector, which is a powerful discriminant for selecting interesting events. The training of the FTK system to achieve a high track-finding efficiency and the adaptability of the system to new detector conditions is presented. Furthermore, the applicability of the system to select candidate events containing long-lived particles is described

Abstract: The design and performance of the inner detector trigger for the high level trigger of the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider during the 2016-2018 data taking period is discussed. In 2016, 2017, and 2018 the ATLAS detector recorded 35.6 fb−1, 46.9 fb−1, and 60.6 fb−1 respectively of proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. In order to deal with the very high interaction multiplicities per bunch crossing expected with the 13 TeV collisions the inner detector trigger was redesigned during the long shutdown of the Large Hadron Collider from 2013 until 2015. An overview of these developments is provided and the performance of the tracking in the trigger for the muon, electron, tau and b-jet signatures is discussed. The high performance of the inner detector trigger with these extreme interaction multiplicities demonstrates how the inner detector tracking continues to lie at the heart of the trigger performance and is essential in enabling the ATLAS physics programme

Elementary particles and their interactions are successfully described by the Standard Model of particle physics (SM). However, it has been observed that extensions Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) are required to account for a large part of yet undiscovered particles and interactions, such as Dark Matter (DM). To advance the knowledge of the SM and to pursue DM discoveries, CERN has the ambitious plan of further increasing the Large Hadron Collider's (LHC) energy and luminosity, thus reaching unprecedented event rates in the field of collider physics. This thesis is divided in three parts, dealing with some of the most challenging aspects of the ATLAS experiment at the LHC present and future activities. After a thorough review of the SM, BSM physics is outlined, with particular attention to DM searches. The second part of this work addresses the issue of coping with the foreseen event rates of the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) phase. Indeed, optimizations of the existing Geant4 simulation codes are a crucial step to alleviate the need for new and expensive hardware resources. With the objective of improving the efficiency of the simulation tools, an extensive study on different compilers, different optimization levels and different build types is presented. In addition, a preliminary investigation on the geometry description of the ATLAS Transition Radiation Tracker (TRT) modules is discussed. The last part of the thesis covers the DM searches carried out by the ATLAS Trigger-object Level Analysis (TLA) group. These searches are based on the analysis of the invariant mass spectrum of di-jet events and, during LHC Run 2, have been performed at energies in the 450-1800 GeV range (integrated luminosity up to 29.3 fb-1 and center of mass energy of 13 TeV). After a review of the TLA studies, a preliminary investigation on the performance of Bayesian and Frequentist statistical tools is presented. In particular, the attention is focused on the interpretation and handling of systematic uncertainties both on background and DM signals. This is of particular importance in the process of finding localized excesses, which can indicate the existence of DM signals, and setting limits on the DM event cross sections.
