This book describes incidents in the lives of many of the European and Anglo-Indian families who lived in Lucknow during the "British Raj" period (1858 to 1947) when India was directly ruled by the British Government after the East India Company was disbanded. The city of Lucknow became famous during the rebellion of 1857 for the long-lasting siege of the Residency, which led to massive destruction of parts of the city after its re-capture by the British. The European and Anglo-indian families who lived through this event generally suffered great hardship in rebuilding their lives. The author has found many examples of their subsequent claims for "succour," pensions and compensation for property lost, often with graphic descriptions of their experiences. The book includes newspaper reports of living conditions in Lucknow in 1859 & 1867 and "letters home" from a young army officer living in cantonments in the late 1860's. Carefully chosen letters, memoirs and articles by civil servants, police and army officers and a young lady give a vivid impression of life in Lucknow from the 1890s up to the war years, including entertainment in the various theatres. A medical officer also describes the preparations made to receive great numbers of sick and wounded men in temporary hospitals following the defeat of the British army in Burma in 1942.For those Europeans whose families lived in Lucknow during the Raj period, this book gives a good flavour of their lives and in many cases records actual details of their ancestors' lives. For those whose families are not directly mentioned in the text, there is a large appendix, based on Indian directories, which gives employment details of over 4,750 individuals at Lucknow. The following is a review of the book by the well-known author of books about Lucknow, Dr. Rosie Llewellyn-Jones:'For anyone interested in the history of Lucknow, that fascinating city in north India, this is an important book. The author, who is related to many of its prominent Anglo-Indian families, has carefully traced what happened to these same families after the cataclysm of the Indian 'Mutiny' and how they began to rebuild their shattered lives. A vivid picture of Lucknow during the British Raj emerges, with anecdotes, petitions, diaries and newspaper reports, each presented in a lively and readable manner. I think people will enjoy this.' I was fortunate to have spent my childhood in pre-1947 India, immersed in a leisurely and privileged culture at a time when people did not rely on television and radio for entertainment but enjoyed the company of friends and family for conversation and social interaction. We had a large extended family, going back many generations in India and, as was the custom, we entertained frequently and often had family and friends as house guests to stay. There was much re-telling of old and loved family tales, and new stories were welcome additions to the existing story pool. Gossip, chatter, current affairs debates, ghost stories, songs and parlourgames were our means of passing the time in an enjoyable way. This book is written in affectionate memory of the Raj of my childhood, which was the only real "homeland" my family had ever known, and of the Indian people who were our work colleagues, neighbours, friends and in some cases relatives.

Anglo-Indians are a mixed-race, Christian and Anglophone minority community which arose in South Asia during the long period of European colonialism. An often neglected part of the British Raj, their presence complicates the traditional binary through which British imperialism is viewed – of ruler and ruled, coloniser and colonised. The book analyses the processes of ethnic group formation and political organisation, beginning with petitions to the East India Company state, through the Raj’s constitutional communalism, to constitution-making for the new India. It details how Anglo-Indians sought to preserve protected areas of state and railway employment amidst the growing demands of Indian nationalism. Anglo-Indians both suffered and benefitted from colonial British prejudices, being expected to loyally serve the colonial state as a result of their ties of kinship and culture to the colonial power, whilst being the victims of racial and social discrimination. This mixed experience was embodied in their intermediate position in the Raj’s evolving socio-racial employment hierarchy. The question of why and how a numerically small group, who were privileged relative to the great majority of people in South Asia, were granted nominated representatives and reserved employment in the new Indian Constitution, amidst a general curtailment of minority group rights, is tackled directly. Based on a wide range of source materials from Indian and British archives, including the Anglo-Indian Review and the debates of the Constituent Assembly of India, the book illuminatingly foregrounds the issues facing the smaller minorities during the drawn out process of decolonisation in South Asia. It will be of interest to students and researchers of South Asia, Imperial and Global History, Politics, and Mixed Race Studies.

In the period between the 1770s and 1840s, through the process of colonial state formation, the early colonial state in India was able to harness and extract vast amounts of agrarian wealth in north India. However, little is known of the histories of the Indian scribes and the role they played in shaping the early patterns of British colonial rule. This book offers a new way of interpreting the colonial state’s origins in north India. It examines how the formation of early agrarian revenue settlements exacerbated an extant late Mughal taxation tradition, and how the success of British power was shaped by this extant paper-oriented revenue culture. It goes on to examine how the service and cultural histories of various Hindu scribal communities fit within broader changes in political administration, taxation, patterns of governance and a shared Indo-Islamic administrative culture. The author argues that British power after the late eighteenth century came as much through bureaucratic mastery, paper and taxes as it did through military force and commercial ruthlessness. The book draws upon private family papers, interviews and Persian sources to demonstrate how the fortunes of scribes changed between empires, and the important role they played at the height of the British Raj by 1900. Offering a detailed account of how agrarian wealth provided the bedrock of the colonial state’s later patterns of administration, this book is a unique and refreshing contribution to studies in South Asian History, Governance and Imperialism.

In a consideration of a vast scope of themes such as ghazal as a form of non-conformist poetry, Hispano-Arabic connections with English poetry, Syed Ahmad Khan's role in the Urdu-Hindi controversy, and madrasa education and its contemporary criticism, the volume forms an important compliment (and corrective) to much of the current writings on the various issues.
