Il volume si propone di indagare percorsi sostenibili che conducono all’attivazione di pratiche di resilienza e di rigenerazione socio-territoriale di spazi “critici” o sottoutilizzati, grazie al coinvolgimento diretto delle comunità locali. La varietà delle esperienze qui presentate si inserisce infatti nel quadro dei paradigmi della sostenibilità e della rigenerazione, i quali conferiscono al volume una cornice epistemologica coerente, che trova applicazione nell’analisi di esperienze e iniziative avviate nel contesto esteso della regione urbana milanese, diventando quest’ultimo laboratorio d’elezione nelle pratiche di risignificazione spaziale avviate dalle comunità e dai soggetti istituzionali locali. Alla base di tali esperienze si pone un forte tratto comune, rappresentato dall’impegno profuso e dalla spinta utopistica che conduce le comunità a far rivivere e risignificare i luoghi, capaci di rispondere a certe urgenze collettive non più procrastinabili. Gli Autori analizzano quattro casi di studio diversi, con l’obiettivo di restituire al lettore, seppur in misura parziale, la complessità delle relazioni attraverso strumenti di indagine quali-quantitativi tipici delle scienze socio-territoriali come documenti cartografici e fotografici, questionari, interviste in profondità e osservazione partecipante: dalle pratiche di agroforestazione rigenerativa in essere al margine sud-orientale della città, alle iniziative di rivitalizzazione commerciale del quartiere Isola; dai giardini condivisi presenti diffusamente all’interno del perimetro urbano milanese fino ai processi di delocalizzazione delle comunità residenti attorno alla grande infrastruttura aeroportuale di Malpensa.

“THE TRUE DIMENSION OF CITIES IS NOT SPACE, BUT TIME” (Konstantinos Doxiadis) This shift from the spatial dimension to that of time, places the focus on the individual’s scale of perception. How individuals spend their time shapes and infuses our environments with meaning, influencing social dynamics and cultural values. The Next Generation EU project exemplifies this shift by integrating lifestyle and environmental sustainability into urban planning. The goal is to facilitate a just transition to a circular economy, redefining not only the physical layout of cities but also the lived experience of its citizens within these evolving spaces. The evolution from the “Citizens’ Sustainable eXperience” to the “Communities’ Sustainable eXperience” , in the interdisciplinary research funded by the European Union, underscores a significant progression from individual to collective experience. UX, rooted in human-centered design, focuses on optimizing products and environments for personal use and satisfaction, CX expands these principles into the realm of more-than-human-centered design, where the focus extends beyond individual users to include wider community interactions and ecosystems. Therefore, the shift from UX to CX in urban planning and design is profoundly ethical. It calls for a paradigm that prioritizes collective well-being and sustainable development, inclusivity and cooperation.

This volume is composed of 24 papers originally presented as talks at the VIII National Conference of the Italian Association of University Language Centres (Associazione Italiana dei Centri Linguistici Universitari: AICLU), held at the University of Foggia, Italy, between 30 May and 1st June 2013. The contributions fall into five sections: 1) keynote addresses from plenary speakers; 2) innovative challenges for language centres; 3) new developments in teaching language for specific purposes; 4) proposals and case studies in Content and Language Integrated Learning; and 5) the use of new technologies in language learning. 18 papers are in English, four in Italian, one in French and one in German. The fact that three-quarters of the papers are in English reflects the way English has become the lingua franca of academic conferences today. However, in keeping with the ethos of CercleS (Confédération Européenne des Centres de Langues de l’Enseignement Supérieur, the pan-European organisation to which AICLU belongs), which is strongly committed to promoting plurilingualism, it was crucial that contributions would also be accepted in other languages. The volume represents the ‘state of the art’ in the field of language teaching and theory in university language centres not only in Italy, but also in other parts of Europe and the Mediterranean, and testifies to the rich variety of ways in which these centres are adapting and thriving in rapidly changing times.
