If Paris is the city of love, then London is the city of lust. From the bath houses of Roman Londinium to the sexual underground of the twentieth century and beyond, The Sexual History of London is an entertaining, vibrant chronicle of London and sex through the ages. For more than a thousand years, England's capital has been associated with desire, avarice, and the sins of the flesh. Richard of Devises, a monk writing in 1180, warned that "every quarter abounds in great obscenities." As early as the second century AD, London was notorious for its raucous festivities and disorderly houses, and throughout the centuries the bawdy side of life has taken easy root and flourished. In The Sexual History of London, award-winning popular historian Catharine Arnold turns her gaze to London's relationship with vice through the ages. London has always traded in the currency of sex. Whether pornographic publishers on Fleet Street, or courtesans parading in Haymarket, its streets have long been witness to colorful sexual behavior. In an accessible, entertaining style, Arnold takes us on a journey through the fleshpots of London from earliest times to present day. Here are buxom strumpets, louche aristocrats, popinjay politicians, and Victorian flagellants—all vying for their place in London's league of licentiousness. From sexual exuberance to moral panic, the city has seen the pendulum swing from Puritanism to hedonism and back again. With latter chapters looking at Victorian London and the sexual underground of the twentieth century and beyond, this is a fascinating and vibrant chronicle of London at its most raw and ribald.

'Her demeanour and tone of voice would be crucial to the money I hoped to make. I knew for a fact that I wouldn't earn a penny if she behaved like a chief executive in bed, ordering me around. She'd kill my desire stone dead if she turned out to be bossy between the sheets.' "The Price of an Education " is a darkly funny story about changing gender relations in tight financial times when Britain's population (and the population of the world as a whole) is ageing rapidly and females are outnumbering males in nearly every age-group. With ever more middle-aged women still frisky and libidinous, is it their destiny to become sexual predators stalking perennially among the dwindling young to satisfy their needs? High-flying media executive Bobbie Cullen is adamant: for her payments she wants 'a high ratio of bangs per buck'. Twenty-year-old law student Leo Allen is seduced by the offer of money for services rendered: he could pay steep tuition fees without getting deeper into debt. But he adores his girlfriend Heidi, which puts him in two horny dilemmas... Hilarious and dead serious at the same time, this story shows aspects of London which visitors seldom discover. It's a walking tour of the capital city's demi-monde. With scenes in Portobello Market, King's College along the Thames, a sex pad in Primrose Hill and the Notting Hill Carnival in full swing, London is just as important a player in this vivid novel driven by character and dialogue.

Victorian Narratives Of Failed Emigration written by Tamara S Wagner and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-05-26 with Literary Criticism categories.

In her study of the unsuccessful nineteenth-century emigrant, Tamara S. Wagner argues that failed emigration and return drive nineteenth-century writing in English in unexpected, culturally revealing ways. Wagner highlights the hitherto unexplored subgenre of anti-emigration writing that emerged as an important counter-current to a pervasive emigration propaganda machine that was pressing popular fiction into its service. The exportation of characters at the end of a novel indisputably formed a convenient narrative solution that at once mirrored and exaggerated public policies about so-called 'superfluous' or 'redundant' parts of society. Yet the very convenience of such pat endings was increasingly called into question. New starts overseas might not be so easily realizable; emigration destinations failed to live up to the inflated promises of pro-emigration rhetoric; the 'unwanted' might make a surprising reappearance. Wagner juxtaposes representations of emigration in the works of Charles Dickens, Wilkie Collins, Frances Trollope, and Charlotte Yonge with Australian, New Zealand, and Canadian settler fiction by Elizabeth Murray, Clara Cheeseman, and Susanna Moodie, offering a new literary history not just of nineteenth-century migration, but also of transoceanic exchanges and genre formation.

City Lust written by Charlie Koolhaas and has been published by Scheidegger and Spiess this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020 with Cities and towns categories.

Charlie Koolhaas is an artist, photographer, and writer in Rotterdam. City Lust is the name of a fragrance that she found in a Dubai perfumery wholesale showroom, but it is also the starting point of an expedition that leads Koolhaas to a variety of places in Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and the United States. In Lagos, Guangzhou, Dubai, London, and Huston, she explores the rapid changes that a globalized economy forces upon these so very different metropolises. During extended stays in each place, Koolhaas took a vast number of photographs, many of them of striking intensity. Her aim is not only to show the increasing uniformity of cities around the world, but also to demonstrate the discrepancy between cultural standardization and local diversity in the age of globalization. City Lust is a brilliant combination of everyday photography, pure documentation, and captivating observation. Accompanying the photos is an equally fascinating and illuminating essay by Koolhaas that brings together her own insights into global trade and its protagonists.
