Written by one of the world's greatest authorities on Martin Luther, this is the definitive biography of the central figure of the Protestant Reformation. “A brilliant account of Luther’s evolution as a man, a thinker, and a Christian. . . . Every person interested in Christianity should put this on his or her reading list.”—Lawrence Cunningham, Commonweal “This is the biography of Luther for our time by the world’s foremost authority.”—Steven Ozment, Harvard University “If the world is to gain from Luther it must turn to the real Luther—furious, violent, foul-mouthed, passionately concerned. Him it will find in Oberman’s book, a labour of love.”—G. R. Elton, Journal of Ecclesiastical History

The work is meticulously documented and the bibliography at the end will alone warrant the price of the book."-- Roland H. Bainton"This book will be an invaluable source of information for students of the Lutheran Reformation. Ecumenists will find in its pages a great resource in their efforts to deal with issues that have been church - divisive."-- Carl J. Peter, Catholic University of America

Martin Luther A Very Short Introduction written by Scott H. Hendrix and has been published by OUP Oxford this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-10-21 with Religion categories.

This introduction presents Martin Luther as historians now see him. Instead of singling him out as a modern hero, the book emphasizes the context in which Luther worked, the colleagues who supported him, and the opponents who adamantly opposed his agenda for change. Scott H. Hendrix explains the religious reformation and Luther's importance, without ignoring the political and cultural forces that led the reformation down paths Luther could neither foresee nor influence. This Very Short Introduction pays tribute to Luther's genius, but also recognizes the self-righteous attitude that alienated contemporaries, offering a unique explanation for that behaviour. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

Jahrhundert. [Martin Luther at the Diet of Worms. Event and Reception] Martin Luther's refusal to recant on 18 April 1521 at the Diet of Worms is one of the great moments of the Reformation. Luther confessed his theological writings before the emperor and the empire. What he had written he could not revoke unless he was overcome »by testimonies of Scripture or clear reasons of reason«. Otherwise, he felt bound by his conscience imprisoned in the Word of God. The contributions in this volume are devoted on the one hand to this event itself in its historical context. On the other hand, the effects of Luther's appearance in Worms are dealt with: in contemporary pamphlets and Luther fables, in pictorial representations through the centuries and later in film, in Protestant intellectual and cultural history, in Luther festivals and in celebrations of Diet anniversaries since the 19th century.

Focusing on Luther's relationship to the papal hierarchy, rather than to the personalities of individual popes, Luther's development as a reformer and the beginnings of the Reformation are studied. Luther emerges from this study as an advocate of the people against a papal hierarchy that was not fulfilling its obligation. --from publisher description.
