Heterostructures consist of combinations of different materials, which are in contact through at least one interface. Magnetic heterostructures combine different physical properties which do not exist in nature. This book provides the first comprehensive overview of an exciting and fast developing field of research, which has already resulted in numerous applications and is the basis for future spintronic devices.

Since the first usage of magnets as navigation tools, magnetism has been an integral part of human technology. As such, with increased demand for more sophisticated technologies, the need to understand magnetism and its applications has also increased. In modern times, the focus of new technologies is on scalability, or how things behave on the smallest scales. To this end it is necessary to understand the fundamental and practical behaviors of magnetic materials at this limit. Recent discoveries in the field of true 2D magnets and the field of topological matter demands investigation of the intersection between these two fields. In the first part of this work a theoretical analysis of the topological behavior of magnon bands in CrI3-like magnetic heterostructures is carried out. This analysis revealed a rich topological phase space wherein topological phase boundaries correspond to abrupt jumps in the thermal Hall conductance of the system, reminiscent of the quantum anomalous Hall effect. Additionally these systems showed distinct and repeating features between heterostructures with an even number of layers and those with an odd number of layers, making it theoretically possible to distinguish between the two based on the behavior of the thermal Hall conductance. Additional work was done on applications of magnetic thin film toward the field of spintronics. Spin-based magnetic random-access memory (MRAM) has a particular advantage over current electronic technology in its intrinsic non-volatility. Additionally, current MRAM devices that use spin-transfer torque can be improved by finding materials with high intrinsic perpendicular magnetic anisotropy which do not rely on interfacial-perpendicular anisotropy. To this end an investigation of the substrate dependent crystallinity of the Heusler alloy Fe2MnSn was performed using in-plane x-ray diffraction. By studying how the growth and orientation of the Bragg peaks ((200) and (002)) that correspond to the primary crystal axes, (a-b axes and c axis, respectively) it was determined that lattice matching and substrate play a large role in the formation of crystal plane orientations, potentially shining light on how these growth modes can influence the magnetic anisotropy of the films.

Nanomagnetism and spintronics is a rapidly expanding and increasingly important field of research with many applications already on the market and many more to be expected in the near future. This field started in the mid-1980s with the discovery of the GMR effect, recently awarded with the Nobel prize to Albert Fert and Peter Grünberg. The present volume covers the most important and most timely aspects of magnetic heterostructures, including spin torque effects, spin injection, spin transport, spin fluctuations, proximity effects, and electrical control of spin valves. The chapters are written by internationally recognized experts in their respective fields and provide an overview of the latest status.

This thesis presents recent developments in magnetic coupling phenomena of ferrimagnetic rare-earth transition-metal Tb-Fe alloys and coupled systems consisting of ferri-/ferromagnetic heterostructures. Taking advantage of the tunability of the exchange coupling between ferrimagnetic and ferromagnetic layers by means of stoichiometry of the Tb-Fe layer, the variable number of repetitions in the Co/Pt multilayer as well as the thickness of an interlayer spacer, it is demonstrated that large perpendicular unidirectional anisotropy can be induced at room temperature. This robust perpendicular exchange bias at room temperature opens up a path towards applications in spintronics.

The connection between charge and spin transport in solid state materials offers new techniques for generating and detecting spin currents and could potentially allow high-performance memory and logic devices. Simple multilayer thin films or “heterostructures” such as Pt/Co have broken inversion symmetry, so a charge current gives rise to net spin current. Electrical and optical measurements reveal the effect of spin current on the magnetization, including chiral spin textures such as domain walls (DWs) and skyrmions. The magnetic properties of an ultrathin magnetic film are strongly sensitive to interfacial effects such as interfacial anisotropy and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction (DMI), which stabilizes chiral spin textures. This thesis is motivated to systematically vary the layer structure of magnetic heterostructures to understand and quantify spin-orbit torques. I showed that switching efficiency is consistent with harmonic spin orbit torque measurements in Pt/Co/Ta. My automation software and improved electromagnet enabled a new experimental technique that highlights the role of DMI in spin-orbit torque switching. I showed that a gold spacer layer inserted between platinum and cobalt independently modulates the DMI and spin transport. I demonstrated SOT switching of a ferromagnetic insulator for the first time. I also developed a temperature-controlled, high-speed electrical and optical measuring system to observe record-breaking DW velocity in ferrimagnetic GdCo. This thesis focuses on building experimental apparatus and understanding spin-orbit torques.

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2008 in the subject Physics - Theoretical Physics, grade: sehr gut (1,0), University of Dortmund, language: English, abstract: In this thesis spin dynamics in (Zn,Mn)Se/(Zn,Be)Se and (Cd,Mn)Te/(Cd,Mg)Te DMS quantum well heterostructures with a type-I band alignment are studied, where the carriers are quantum confined. Especially the important role of free carriers in heating of the Mn-system, by its interaction with photoexcited carriers with excess kinetic energy, and in the cooling of the Mn-system in the presence of cold background carriers, provided by modulation doping, is established. The studies are separated in three chapters. In the fourth chapter of this thesis, new results on energy and spin transfer between free carriers and Mn-ion system are presented. Contributions of direct heating of the Mn-system by photocarriers and indirect heating via nonequilibrium phonons are distinguished and their competition is discussed. In the fifth chapter dynamics of spin-lattice relaxation of magnetic Mn-ions in DMS QW heterostructures is investigated and new experimental studies on (Zn,Mn)Se/(Zn,Be)Se heterostructures are shown. Crucial for spintronic devices is the ability to tune the spin relaxation time precisely, as the spin relaxation time is important in double respects. On the one hand spin polarization must be conserved over long times and distances, if the spin shall be processed or stored in a region, which is spatial separated from the spin-injector. Especially for the possibility of utilizing spins as quantum bits for quantum information processing, long spin polarization is needed. On the other hand short spin relaxation time is needed for fast switching between different spin-states. For instance semiconductor lasers can be switched off extremely fast by reorientation of spin. This very relevant topic is devoted the sixth chapter, before the thesis is summarized in the last chapter. Especially for one of the biggest drawbacks for precise tuning, that the magnetization dynamics in DMS cannot be controlled separately from the static magnetization, solutions via electric field control of the magnetization dynamics or via the technological concept of “digital alloying” are presented.precise tuning, that the magnetization dynamics in DMS cannot be controlled separately from the static magnetization, solutions via electric field control of the magnetization dynamics or via the technological concept of “digital alloying” are presented.
