Excerpt from Makers of American History: A Beginner's Book in the History of Our Country This little book is an effort to sketch the lives of some of the makers of American history in such a way as to present the strong points of their characters, and at the same time to narrate the main events in our history. It is believed that the book has a place in the schools in that it may be used in at least three different ways as a primary history, as a supplement to a more formal school history, and as a supplementary reader. Excerpt from Makers of American History Calhoun Webster, and Clay were by far the ablest public men of their generation. The three were born, flourished, and died in singular coincidence of dates, Calhoun's lifetime being from I 782 to 1850, Webster's from 1782 to 1852, and Clay's from 1777 to 1852. The first two may be said to have represented, at the time of their greatest activity, the extremes of the political discussions of their day, and Mr. Clay, the middle-ground of attempted reconciliation. Excerpt from Makers of American History: Captain John Smith Whoever expects to find much that is new in the following biographical notice of Captain Smith, will probably be disappointed. My aim has been to give a lucid and simple narrative of the events in the life of one of the most remarkable men that ever lived in the tide of times, with the use of materials con tained in works which are familiar to those who have studied the early history of this country. My task has been the humble one of arranging, selecting from, condensing, and transposing these ample though confused materials, so as to form such a nar rative as would recommend itself to the popular taste. Captain Smith's own writings, which have fur nished me with nearly all my facts, are not easily accessible to the public at large, and would not be generally read if they were. Their obsolete diction and uncouth spelling would repel any but a professed antiquary. I have endeavored to translate them into a modern style, and to give them a modern garb, though I have permitted Captain Smith to speak for himself on many occasions. Excerpt from Guide to the Study and Reading of American History Parts IV, V, and VI contain references made and classified on an entirely different basis from that of the earlier part of the work. Under one hundred and seventy-nine successive topics appear specific references to works and designated parts of works, arranged under the four captions, General, Special, Sources, and Bibliography. These references are intended to be useful to readers, students, and teachers who wish to be directed to the most convenient and most available treatment of particular subjects. In some cases, particularly in the topics on economic and social history, there is a subdivision easily understood by the user. Excerpt from The Plain Story of American History My purpose in writing this book is expressed in the title. I wish that it may be a plain story of the achievement of human beings in that part of the Western Hemisphere which is now the United States of America. To relate the main facts clearly and broadly, rather than to describe many detailed occurrences, has been constantly in my mind. The story here presented may be taken as an introduction for a wider study of our history. It has been my aim to use simple but strong language, and to place the emphasis of the book on human actions. But much attention has been given to social history, and in two chapters the outlines of American government have been presented. I hope the book will prove neither hard nor easy for pupils. If it is received as a straightforward story, drawing forth the earnest efforts of capable pupils and making for the success of faithful teachers, it will be a source of pleasure for the author, repaying him for many days and nights of careful study of our national history. More especially, I wish that the book may serve, along with many other excellent works of similar scope, to give to the American youth a better appreciation of the glorious history of their native land, and to create in them a warmer purpose to serve their country and promote its progress. With the hope of making the task of the teacher lighter, the chapters have been made short and an abundance of marginal headings has been introduced. On the basis of these headings complete outlines can be made by the pupils, which, when studied under the chapter headings, will give the pupil good topical grasp of the subject. Excerpt from The Founders of America British War with France in 1763; it is such events as these that keep certain yea'rs memorable for good or ill. These great landmarks in the history of the Europe of our ancestors, should be celebrated as American holidays, as well as the great anniversaries that are associated with our own soil. Some of the actors in these events seem akin to us, as if they had been Americans before the discovery of the New World; and the study of their family history rewards us by proving that their blood flowed in the veins of some of those who become Founders of America. Their great ideas flashing through the brains of their friends and followers, resulted in the realization in the New World of what they had merely dreamed in the Old.
