Successful senior living doesn’t just happen by itself. Retirement needs a plan and key information to make these rich years happy and healthy ones. This book is intended to help retirees prepare for the aging process and to plan to make good decisions about each of the challenges to age well. Our senior life can be the “golden years,” but healthy living comes when we make responsible life choices. This book is intended to be a guide to make that happen in your life. It is filled with positive suggestions and clues to help you decide to live a wellness lifestyle in your retirement years. This book is built on the concept that we all need to be better decision-makers about the quality of our life as we age. It is based on the assumption as well that we do make self-destructive choices, which can harm our health (i.e., obesity). The message of the book is focused on our need to establish a pattern of making responsible life choices. The content of this resource is full of positive suggestions to accomplish that goal. It is a helpful guide for a successful retirement, but it needs to be read by all adults regardless of age so they are better prepared for living a healthy lifestyle in their golden years. The author also suggests that all of us could benefit enormously if we could gather in community throughout our country to discuss how we can make better choices on these important decisions for our future.

Hello, seniorhood. A large percentage of us are fighting to stay healthy and happy. In order to truly understand the fight for health, one has to be a part of the fight. Believe me, I am. I have found a way to be healthy and happy without stress. As you fold the pages back in this book, I hope the topics discussed will offer compassion and understanding; a time to look back for some, with a warm smile, motivation, and strength for all. The topics include diabetes, cardiovascular health and other health conditions, how eating correctly is important, and how illnesses do connect with healthy meal planning. Understanding sugars, sodium, fats, and cholesterol is also crucial. Do you understand how to read food labels? Read how a member of the seniorhood tries hard every day to turn the unhappy days around to happier ones in dealing with her illnesses. The majority of our conditions in health we share together. Are there correct and incorrect ways to eat with certain health conditions? The answers are available right inside this book. How extremely important and necessary is your medical staff? Depression in the elderly is very much alive. We as seniors are battle fighters, so let us fight for health. We are strangers to one another, but not in our fight. Take what you read and mold it into a determination not to give up. These are our golden and silver years; they belong to us. No one else can feel what we feel or have the wonderful memories we have locked in our lives.

For the first time in human history, the prospect of living a long, healthy and productive life has become a reality for the majority of people What was the privilege of the few has become the destiny of the many. Robert Butler, MD, Gerontologist Choices & Changes is offered as a guide on how to plan to get the most from lifes second halfnot how to plan to get the most from retirement. While you may think this is splitting hairs, you will come to realize how the words we use impact our perceptions, our self-image and ultimately our reality when planning for and experiencing the future. I have attempted to avoid the use of stereotypical terms like retiree, retirement, senior and other mindless terms often used to categorize millions of active, wise and responsible citizens (except when necessary to establish context.) I contend that how you choose to view the years ahead and your role in shaping that view will have a major impact on the quality and quite possibly the quantity of those years. Therefore, before discussing the elements of your life plan, it is important to spend some time talking about expectations, aspirations and the words we use when discussing and creating our plans. In order to communicate with one another, we use words first, to create categories in which we then place people and things; and then, to create criteria with which to distinguish between those categories (age, sex, nationality, race, religion, education, etc). As we do this, the categories ultimately (and often unconsciously) shape our world view. Retirement, for example, is a word stereotypically used to categorize that portion of life that occurs when one quits working and becomes old. As such, we tend to distinguish retirees from productive members of society. We then help others distinguish these people by creating categories to describe places where they gather (senior centers) or dwell (retirement communities, healthcare centers, assisted living communities or 50+ communities.) Retirement is that magical time of life when the focus somehow shifts from who you are and what you doto what you once did and who you used to be, as if all your experience is at once inaccessible to the person youve become How does this type of prejudice occur? Where does it come from? Lets examine the word. Various dictionaries offer multiple definitions of the word retirement: To go away, retreat or withdraw to a private, sheltered or secluded place To go to bed To give ground as in battle, retreat, withdraw To give up ones work, business, or career especially because of advancing age To move back or away or seem to do so You probably have noticed most of these definitions focus on quitting, going away, withdrawing from or giving up. Retirement implies that your self worth and your worth to society are a thing of the past. Such an implication is negative, unfounded and dangerous to ones health. It is fine to retire for the evening; but it is not fine to retire from life simply because of some mindless designation. While retirement may have been an appropriate descriptor of later life during the industrial age, when very few people lived into their 60s and 70s, the term is no longer relevant when applied to todays active, healthy and well-educated older adults. Perhaps it is time to retire words like retirement, retired or retiree when referring to people in lifes second half, just as we have retired other words used to categorize and demean minorities and women over the years. I have been railing a

Cheeseburgers For Seniors written by John Graham and has been published by Lifeswell this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-01-16 with categories.

With a life spent in senior services, author John D. Graham has developed a compassionate voice. His personal perspective is fully informed with his vast array of experience in senior advocacy and in leadership of senior living organizations. In sharing his expertise, via Cheeseburgers for Seniors: Top 10 Reasons Your Parents Don't Want to Move to Senior Living, with the burgeoning baby boomer population, he munificently outlines pitfalls and warning signs, and offers alternative, proactive approaches. As the title of Graham's book belies, this is not a tired tome intended to frighten you or your family. It is a tongue-in-cheek, lighthearted approach to a crucial topic. In a positive and upbeat manner, Cheeseburgers for Seniors gives practical advice about how to avoid what you do not want, and how to achieve the life that you do want. Senior living is often the last thing people think about. It may be because that time of life is often marked with health issues, as well as changes in life expectations and family roles. While some of these things can be uncomfortable to consider, lack of understanding and proper planning often leads to an undesirable outcome-an unpleasant lifestyle that could be avoided by making informed life choices. Graham's book underscores the importance of taking responsibility for your own life. As a senior, you still have the right to build the life you want. But, without information, consideration, and conscious decision-making, you cannot possibly sculpt your future in the way you desire. Planning ahead gives you the best possible chance for the best possible life. Graham's compassionate tone and humor help you look at things you might otherwise rather put off, in order to ensure your future happiness and healthiness. Graham's tone is more that of a loving and concerned son than a clinical academic pointing out surveys, probabilities, and facts. And like a good and thorough conversation, Cheeseburgers for Seniors takes you through every aspect of what to expect when planning a senior-living experience. An honest, humorous, and sobering self-help guide that also has a sunny and positive outlook, this book is never nebulous. Graham methodically outlines the best thought processes and the steps that can be taken. As you read, you will certainly be surprised at things you never thought to consider, things you never even knew about. After completing Cheeseburgers for Seniors, you will be fully informed on the basic framework for building a quality senior-living experience. Plus, you will have good questions to ask before making final choices you and your loved ones will have to live with. Graham specifically addresses senior consumer education about what living choices are available, timing considerations, lifestyle options, care choices, required interpersonal skills, purchases that should be made, decision making delegation, financial allocations, quality measures, questions that need asking, and so much more. This guide is critical for any baby boomer and certainly for their senior parents.
