This book, Biodiversity of Mangroves is a maiden endeavour of this, or by any other author, to unveil the hidden and rich treasure of biotal, physiographic, tribal, marine, coastal and other resources bringing under one umbrella- The Mangroves . It also highlights Tiger-Man interaction and rendenvous of innumerable invertebrate and vertebrate fauna, endemic and rare biota ot two premier mangrove sites situated at northern and southern apexes of The Bay of Bengal. The author does not merely layout checklists of plants and animals, birds and fishes, he also brings forth-facts on site-specific species, species association, endemism, biogeographic and other qualities. The most attractive and realistic aspect of Tiger Cult; and Man-Tiger interaction of Sundarbans have been brought to light. For the Bay Islands, indepth facts on several vanishing tribals, rare and endemic biota, problem and issues of Tropical Rain Forest and conservation strategy have been identified. Sundarban s mangrove history remains a sterile subject Sans Tiger-Man interaction and without revelation of Tiger s behavi-oural pattern; Similarly, without the vanishing tribals struggle for existence and stress stricken biotal s survival history the bay Islands remain in dark. In this field the author takes the pride to bring forth very many hidden qualities of these two mangrove forests to light so far not considered by any to discuss under one umbrella. The presentation has been made mostly from the author s own experience and involvement in scientific work, and his findings in both the areas which have also been recorded in books and various research papers since 1970. The readers are sure to have a realistic conception of the resources, problems and conservation strategy at a glance which is a unique presentation of the author. Based upon actual events. In February, 1945, the Japanese garrison on Ramree Island began a retreat to mainland Burma under heavy British fire. Poorly equipped and on foot, one thousand men of the 121st Imperial Infantry Regiment marched into a massive mangrove swamp, and into the jaws of a nightmare. Days later, only twenty soldiers emerged alive. Lt. Shoji Kichida, a young man weary of battle and longing for home, is about to learn there are horrors worse than war, as he leads his men into what has become known as the greatest crocodile massacre in recorded history.

This book presents a historical and ethnographic study of changing mangrove management in northern Vietnam over the past 100 years, grounded in a case study in the Red River Delta in northern Vietnam. The book shows that three primary socio-economic dynamics have affected mangroves: enclosure movements that have restricted access by different user communities over time, such as the exclusion of women; changing valuation of mangroves and their products and services; and social and class differentiation caused by privatization of once common resources. The result of these pressures have been erosions of norms, rules, and collective action to protect and nurture mangroves, leading to widespread loss of coastal forests. Sustainable mangrove management will require attention to these dynamics to address current-day land conflicts. The book will be of interest to policy-makers, practitioners, and academics and students in forest policy, management and governance; rural livelihoods; and globalization and agrarian change.

It was no time to fear animals when the possibility of the enemy counteroffensive was increasing. It didn't suit a soldier to lose nerve in the presence of a mere crocodile At the end of World War II, a garrison of the Twenty-eighth Japanese Army is deployed to Ramree Island, off the coast of Burma, to fight the Allies' severe counteroffensive. While on the island, Superior Private Minoru Kasuga questions a local villager about the terrible smell coming from the saltwater creek. To his horror, the old man tells him it is the stench of death from the breath of man-eating crocodiles that inhabit Myinkhon Creek. Fierce fighting drives the battalion to the island's east coast, and they must evacuate to Burma by crossing the creek. Just before they embark, Kasuga smells the same putrid odor that he'd questioned the villager about and warns his commanding officer of the underwater danger. His sergeant ignores him, thinking Kasuga is obsessed with wild stories from the villagers, and he tells the soldiers to cross the creek. Ordered to save the penned-in garrison, Second Lieutenant Yoshihisa Sumi arrives on Ramree Island. But what awaits him at Myinkhon Creek is a sight too horrible to contemplate
