The Indian IT industry, which has grown at a phenomenal rate since 1991, today finds itself on the brink of a potentially painful transition to deliver more value and innovation. Managing Nothing throws new light on the challenge of innovation that has dogged the industry for over two decades. Drawing upon two decades of action research experience in two leading Indian IT firms, the author, through a narrative-reflexive inquiry, argues that the current crisis is not because leaders lacked foresight or business acumen. Instead, it is the limitation of mainstream managerial thought in dealing with the complexity of human interaction in global IT service networks that has reduced the pursuit of higher level capabilities such as consulting, service design and innovation to nothing. To help correct the situation, the book makes a startlingly obvious yet counter-intuitive suggestion: it exhorts managers and employees to pay attention to the small differences that emerge in ordinary day-to-day workplace interactions among people, i.e., the micro-politics of everyday work.

Do Nothing written by J. Keith Murnighan and has been published by Penguin this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-06-14 with Business & Economics categories.

Imagine you’ve just come back to work after a two-week vacation during which you actually relaxed, without calling in or checking e-mail. You discover that there are no pressing issues and that, on the contrary, your team scored a big new customer and fixed a nagging problem during your absence. No red flags or fires to put out. Sadly, for most leaders this scenario is only a dream. They constantly check on what’s happening because they expect the worst (and usually get it). But Keith Murnighan shows that not only is “do nothing” leadership possible, it is also far more effective than doing too much. Great leaders don’t work; they facilitate and orchestrate. They think of great strategies and help others implement them. They spend their time preparing for the future. They take a comprehensive view of their terrain while also noticing key details so they can confidently choose the right forks in the road. In other words, great leaders don’t do anything—except think, make key decisions, help people do their jobs better, and add a touch of organizational control to make sure the final recipes come out okay. In sharp contrast, most leaders are too busy actually working to do these things—and their teams suffer as a result. Do Nothing!’s practical strategies and true stories will show you how to set high expectations for your team and watch it rise to the challenge. It will help you establish a healthier culture by trusting people more than they expect to be trusted. And it will help you overcome your natural tendencies toward micromanagement so you can let people do their jobs—even when you know you could do their jobs better. As Murnighan writes, “My experience suggests that you will be surprised—wildly surprised. People on your team will reveal skills you never knew they had and will accomplish things that go far beyond your estimate of their capabilities. They might not do things the way you would do them, but they will get results you never expected. Everyone has hidden talents, and most leaders never discover them. Before you reject this approach, ask yourself: what if you did nothing and it actually worked?”

"This book is engaging, romantic and well written. It is most delightful when the author paints pictures with her words and brings to life magic moments in time through her sensitive, imaginative, nuanced awareness of the thoughts, feelings and the wonderful details of environment, circumstances and dialogue. It feels as if you are somehow there in those magic moments. It is a personal love story that touches parts of us all." -David Schoen, Jungian Analyst, Poet and author of Divine Tempest; the Hurricane as Psychic Phenomenon

Restless Valley written by Philip Shishkin and has been published by Yale University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-05-21 with History categories.

This award-winning foreign correspondent’s vivid account of Central Asia’s recent history “reads like a novel but is the stuff of hard-won journalism” (Gary Shteyngart, author of Absurdistan). Here are the stories of two revolutions, a massacre of unarmed civilians, a civil war, a drug-smuggling highway, brazen corruption schemes, contract hits, and larger-than-life characters who may be villains, heroes, or possibly both. Restless Valley is a gripping, contemporary chronicle of Central Asia from a veteran journalist with extensive experience in the region. Both Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan have struggled with the challenges of post-Soviet, independent statehood, and both became entangled in America’s Afghan campaign when the United States built military bases within their borders. Meanwhile, the region was becoming a key smuggling hub for Afghanistan’s booming heroin trade. Through the eyes of local participants—the powerful and the powerless—Shishkin reconstructs how Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan have ricocheted between extreme repression and democratic strivings; how alliances with the United States and Russia have brought mixed blessings; and how Stalin’s legacy of ethnic gerrymandering continues to incite conflict today. “The weird, the strange, the corrupt, and the grand are all evident . . . [Shishkin] relentlessly pursues and then tells the stories of the most corrupt and powerful and also the most sincere and admirable characters who inhabit these mountains.” —Ahmed Rashid, The New York Review of Books
