This is a generous, long-overdue presentation of the major Brazilian poet Manuel Bandeira (1886–1968) to the English-speaking reader. Well over a hundred poems appear here in both Portuguese and English, together with a critical overview that introduces the poet and Brazilian poetry to the nonspecialist and contributes significantly to the existing body of Bandeira scholarship. Bandeira’s poetry not only stands among the most important in twentieth-century Brazil but also embodies the experience of transition from one literary movement to another. The poems span a half century of writing, from the publication of Bandeira’s first book in 1917 to the definitive edition of his collected work in 1966. Because critics agree that the poet’s most influential creative efforts began in 1930 with the publication of Libertinagem (Libertinism), the collection concentrates on the later period. A smaller number of poems drawn from the three books published before this date provide a useful basis for comparison. Candace Slater’s fine versions of the poems are augmented by a translator’s note that considers Bandeira’s poetic language in terms of the particular challenges it offers the translator into English. Her introduction offers a fresh and comprehensive look at the poet whose artistic transformation from nineteenth-century modes of expression to experimental twentieth-century Modernism paralleled the transformation of his country. It focuses on the poet’s continuing alternation between an acceptance of, if not allegiance to, the material world and a desire for something more. This fundamental though often subtle opposition is reflected in the title, This Earth, That Sky. RESUMEN: Con el fin de explicar el lirismo de Bandeira, en el artículo se analizan dos de sus poemas amorosos. Aunque los dos pertenecen a una etapa inicial del poeta y tratan sobre el mismo tema, son muy diferentes, lo que permite establecer cierta evolución en su estilo y en el tratamiento de los conceptos. En los dos aparece el tema de la muerte, fundamental en toda la obra del poeta, y en ambos se refleja una misma imposibilidad de gozar del amor que cobra sentido al conocer la importancia de la enfermedad como elemento coyuntural de su forma de estar en el mundo. En ambos late una pena, pero en el primero, más sencillo y encorsetado por el verso regular, el dolor se diluye en la generalidad y en lo anecdótico, también en una forma poética más primitiva, atenta a cumplir con las normas métricas. Ya en el segundo, el yo se compromete con el sentimiento, lo desgrana aún a riesgo de herirse, y establece una mayor libertad en el plano formal que deriva en relaciones y conexiones más atrevidas que lo hacen más complejo. Palabras clave: Manuel Bandeira; Análisis de textos; Amor; Muerte. RESUMO: Com a finalidade de explicar o lirismo de Bandeira, no artigo serão analisados dois poemas de amor. Mesmo que os dois poemas pertencem a uma etapa inicial do poeta e tratam sobre o mesmo tema, são muito diferentes, o que permite estabelecer certa evolução no seu estilo e no tratamento de conceitos. Nos dois aparece o tema da morte, fundamental em toda sua obra, e em ambos se reflete a mesma impossibilidade de desfrutar do amor que ganha sentido quando se conhece a importância da enfermidade como elemento conjuntural de sua forma de estar no mundo. Nos dois textos sente-se uma pena, mas no primeiro, mais simples e rígido pelo verso regular, a dor se dilui na generalidade e no anedótico, também em uma forma poética mais primitiva, atenta a cumprir com as normas métricas. Já no segundo, o «eu» se compromete com o sentimento, desprendido ainda com o risco de se ferir e estabelece uma maior liberdade no plano formal que deriva em relações e conexões mais atrevidas que o fazem mais complexo. Palavras-chave: Manuel Bandeira; Análise literária; Amor; Morte. ABSTRACT: In this paper, we analyze two love poems written by Manuel Bandeira in different moments. They both tackle the issue of death, very important in the poet’s life and work. The first one is more simple and anecdotic, following rigid metric rules.
