This collection brings together analyses from a range of educational contexts around the world of the ways in which notions of identity and difference, belonging and exclusion are constructed within and beyond the context of education. Three key themes link the chapters within the book: · current policy and practice in education and educational research; · educational imperialism and its legacy; · cultures and sub-cultures within and beyond educational contexts. Part One, Educational Policy and Practice: Internal Colonisations, explores what might be described as the "internal" colonization of education by a certain set of hegemonic ideas and practices--practices which the authors in this book set out collectively to resist. In Part Two, Educational Imperialism and its Legacy, the focus turns to "external" imperialism within education. In Part Three, Culture and Subculture Within and Beyond Education, notions of space, place and identity are interwoven with linguistic, symbolic and material cultural markers. The contributors are Elizabeth Atkinson, Stephen Ball, Renée DePalma, Stephen Dobson, David Gough, Ruby Greene, Jennifer Lavia, Ahmad Nazari, Carrie Paechter, Michael Reiss, John Storey, Takako Takano, Maddalena Taras, Carol Vincent and Deborah Youdell. The book is intended for academics, for students working at Masters level and above and for education professionals and policy makers and will also appeal to scholars working in education and those involved in interdisciplinary work or working in the fields of sociology, cultural studies and sociolinguistics.

Children at risk of marginalization in education are found in all societies. At first glance, The lives of these children may appear poles apart. The daily experiences of slum dwellers in Kenya, ethnic minority children in Viet Nam and a Roma child in Hungary are very different. What they have in common are missed opportunities to develop their potential, realize their hopes and build a better future through education.A decade has passed since world leaders adopted the Education for All goals. While progress has been made, millions of children are still missing out on their right to education. Reaching the marginalized identifies some of the root causes of disadvantage, both within education and beyond, and provides examples of targeted policies and practices that successfully combat exclusion. Set against the backdrop of the global economic crisis, The Report calls for a renewed financing commitment by aid donors and recipient governments alike to meet the Education for All goals by 2015.This is the eighth edition of the annual EFA Global Monitoring Report. The Report includes statistical indicators on all levels of education in more than 200 countries and territories.

This book offers an international perspective of philosophical, conceptual and praxis-oriented issues that impinge on achieving education for all students. It sheds light on the historical, systemic, structural, organizational, and attitudinal barriers that continue to be antithetical to the philosophy and practice of inclusive education within the Caribbean. The first section of the book examines how globalized views of inclusion informed by philosophical ideas from the North have influenced and continue to influence the equity in education agenda in the region. The second section considers how exclusion and marginalization still occur across selected Caribbean islands. It provides both quantitative and qualitative data about the nature and experience of exclusion in selected Caribbean islands, the UK and USA. The third section tackles the practical realities of transforming education systems in the Caribbean for inclusion. In particular, it identifies teacher practices as the mainsite of interrogation that needs to be tackled if inclusion is to be successful. The fourth and final section examines the contribution of principals and exemplars to the development and advocacy for inclusive education. It discusses how educational leadership is understood, as well as the role of school principals in making inclusion a reality in schools, the challenges experienced and the qualities of education leaders.

What might it mean for young children with disabilities to experience freedom and belonging from their earliest moments in school? This volume provides an accessible discussion and analysis of how critical perspectives on disability can inform our work with children, families, and teachers in early childhood settings. Over twenty international contributors center disability and prioritize children’s perspectives across a variety of contexts, including Head Start, community-based centers, public school classrooms, and home visiting. This one-of-a-kind book argues that a focus on disability and ableism is necessary for countering traditional developmental perspectives and oppressive notions of “normalcy” to advance justice and belonging for marginalized young children. Chapter topics include: Histories and contexts of ableism in early childhood. Affirming and supporting positive disability identity in early childhood. Creating interdependence and relationships of support with and between children in early care settings. Critical perspectives on social–emotional development that recognize children’s varied expressions as legitimate. Children’s expansive, multilingual, and multimodal meaning-making in the context of standardized academic goals. Integrating Indigenous, Afrocentric, and disability justice perspectives in early childhood and teacher education. Centering the priorities, engagement strategies, and resistance of minoritized families, including disabled parents.

Educating Marginalized Communities In East And Southeast Asia written by Khun Eng Kuah and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-11-25 with Education categories.
Despite the enshrinement by the United Nations in 1948 of education as a universal human right, and despite the ideals espoused in the Education for All declaration in Dakar in 1990, it is patently clear that these ideals remain far from realized for a substantial portion of humankind. Especially at risk are vulnerable segments of society such as women, migrants, refugees, rural populations, ethnic minorities, and the financially disadvantaged. This book centres on efforts to provide education to these marginalized populations in the East and Southeast Asian region. Of particular interest are questions of financing and control. As various governments have struggled to manage the escalating costs of building schools, training teachers and educating students, the topic of public private partnerships in educational provision has assumed growing importance. The seven chapters presented here highlight a variety of partnerships among state, civil society and non-government organisations (NGOs).

Achieving the 'lofty Goal 4' of the UNSDGs, which aims to 'ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all', 'will require the entire education system to be reconfigured'- a fact as aptly underlined in the National Education Policy 2020 of India. This would essentially entail putting in place a very effective educational governance devised and formulated on the basis of cutting edge research outputs. Three Volumes of the present book is a modest yet maiden attempt to comprehend and unfold the blending of diverse research methodologies and amply demonstrate, through empirical findings, that innovative policies and interventions curated on the basis of this approach of research can ensure quality education. Governance emerges as one of the core areas for research. Therefore, Volume I provides a wide canvas of governance in general and educational governance in particular for research along with a unique opportunity to elaborate both the theory and practice of Quantitative, Qualitative and Participatory Methodologies in researching governance that is the frontier challenge looking for suitable answers. Volume II uniquely comprehends multiple aspects of quality in dynamic and wider perspectives as perceived by the primary stakeholders including community. Refreshing insight into the quality perspectives of educational governance will facilitate the researchers to explore innovative interventions in respective areas of human development. 'Community' is the third constituent of governance along with the 'state' and the 'market'. Therefore, Volume III explores a futuristic vision of community governance leading to quality education. Also an attempt has been made to critically appraise the provisioning of community governance including the local self-governments as well as free and compulsory elementary education. The Book is a live comprehension of the conceptual framework of research and methods along with handling of research problems at the ground. It is like explaining 'how to' by giving suitable case-studies conducted by the authors on educational governance. It is hoped that the three Volumes will be an exciting learning experience that would enable us to address researching challenges over which the public policy makers, researchers, development administrators, planners and students may build their concepts, logical structures and planned interventions facilitating the achievement of effective educational governance at micro-level ensuring quality education in the coming decades.
