Daß die Diskussion um die Interpretation seiner Aussagen noch immer nicht verebbt ist, ist – so könnte man sagen – Smiths eigene Schuld. Hätte er nicht die Metapher der „unsichtbaren Hand“ verwendet und staatliche Abstinenz vom Wirtschaftsprozeß gefordert, zugleich aber Raum gelassen für staatliche Eingriffe in einer Vielzahl von Bereichen, dann ergäben sich möglicherweise aus seinem Werk weniger Widersprüche und Ungereimtheiten. “Smith was always in favour of natural order and market adjustment. Except, of course, when he was not.” (David A. Reisman). „The Wealth of Nations“ ist ohne Zweifel ein Plädoyer für ein von staatlichen Übergriffen befreites ökonomisches System, in dem die Aktivitäten der Einzelnen zur Erhöhung des allgemeinen Wohlstand führen. Aber Smith machte selbst eine Reihe von Ausnahmen von diesem Prinzip. Diese Arbeit versucht, in Auseinandersetzung mit der Interpretation des so geläufigen Begriffs der „unsichtbaren Hand“ das Verhältnis von Laissez-faire und Regulation bei Smith zu klären und überprüft in diesem Sinne anschließend Smiths Aussagen zur Organisation des nationalen Geld- und Bankenwesen. Dabei wird deutlich, daß Smith weder von den Befürwortern einer Laissez-faire-Marktwirtschaft noch den Protagonisten staatlicher Intervention mit vollem Recht für sich vereinnahmt werden kann. Daß Smith manchmal in Widersprüche zwischen die von ihm entworfenen Idealvorstellungen und seinen aus empirischen Beobachtungen gezogenen Schlußfolgerungen geriet, zeigen sein Ausführungen zur Bankenregulation: Das von ihm geforderte, vollständig wettbewerblich organisierte Banken- und Geldsystem wird durch die von Smith selbst befürworteten zeitgenössischen Regulationen des Gesetzgebers konterkariert. Diese gesetzlichen Maßnahmen verstärkten in der Konsequenz die dominierende Stellung der Bank of England und begünstigten so die Entwicklung zu einer zentralwirtschaftlichen Bankenordnung.

More specifically, it investigates how the media's framing of European identity can facilitate and/or impede the emergence of European solidarity on the individual level. Through an online experiment that tested the effect of two different media identity frames on individual solidarity during the European debt crisis, the author argues that the exposure to news articles using a value-based identity frame boosts solidarity compared to an economic identity frame. This interdisciplinary work will be of interest to scholars of political sociology, political communication and political psychology, as well as any researchers who study European integration.
