Dumas cultivated a unique position within the world of figurative painting beginning with expressive drawings of human figures -powerful figurative works that explore themes of gender, identity, sexual and ethnic violence, and oppression. In the paintings there is always clear interplay between image and spectator: her models give the impression of observing, rather than being observed. Suspect, the title of this exhibition and catalog, is just as wonderfully ambiguous; the show undermines preconceived notions about victims and executioners while adding to the pool of doubt the idea that these images themselves might be "suspect ." The catalog features Dumas' recent works as well as a series created specifically for her exhibition. The book includes a long interview with the artist and a collection of her writings.

Organized and promoted by the Fondazione Stelline, the solo show of Marlene Dumas, one of the best known and most admired contemporary artists, presents twentytwo recent works: fifteen new paintings exhibited for the first time, alongside seven works from her recent London exhibition 'Forsaken' (2011), and fifteen historical drawings and watercolours. Some of the artist's favourite themes are powerfully featured here: the crucifixion, famous people linked to dramatic events, "people in extreme suffering" who represent the humanity that is the focus of her painting. The exhibition venue itself - the former orphanage and boarding school "Le Stelline"--And some sculptures from the Museo del Castello Sforzesco, including the Michelangelo's 'Pietà Rondanini', have been a source of inspiration for the paintings, inspired by the encounter with Milan and created specifically for this event, alongside seven works from her recent series 'Forsaken'.Exhibition: Fondazione Stelline, Milan, Italy (13.3.-17.6.2012).

'This is a remarkable, challenging and bravely original work.' The Guardian Ripped from the world by her husband's paranoia, Desdemona turns in death towards the memory of Barbary, the North African maid who raised her: together, they explore the contours of death, race, war, love and motherhood, in a moving elegy. Audacious with ambition, Desdemona is Toni Morrison's intimate reimagining of the fourth act of Shakespeare's Othello, mixing monologue with Rokia Traore's lyrical songs to re-examine the Bard's presentation of race and female suffering. Part-play, part-concert, part-quest into the afterlife, Desdemona is published in Methuen Drama's Modern Classics series, featuring a new introduction by Joyce Green MacDonald.

Bad New Days written by Hal Foster and has been published by Verso Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-09-08 with Art categories.

Bad New Days examines the evolution of art and criticism in Western Europe and North America over the last twenty-five years, exploring their dynamic relation to the general condition of emergency instilled by neoliberalism and the war on terror. Considering the work of artists such as Thomas Hirschhorn, Tacita Dean, and Isa Genzken, and the writing of thinkers like Jacques Rancire, Bruno Latour, and Giorgio Agamben, Hal Foster shows the ways in which art has anticipated this condition, at times resisting the collapse of the social contract or gesturing toward its repair; at other times burlesquing it. Against the claim that art making has become so heterogeneous as to defy historical analysis, Foster argues that the critic must still articulate a clear account of the contemporary in all its complexity. To that end, he offers several paradigms for the art of recent years, which he terms "abject," "archival," "mimetic," and "precarious."

A classified bibliographic resource for tracing the history of Jewish translation activity from the Middle Ages to the present day, providing the researcher with over a thousand entries devoted solely to the Jewish role in the east-to-west transmission of Greek and Arab learning and science into Latin or Hebrew. Other major sections extend the coverage to modern times, taking special note of the absorption of European literature into the Jewish cultural orbit via Hebrew, Yiddish, or Judezmo translations, for instance, or the translation and reception of Jewish literature written in Jewish languages into other languages such as Arabic, English, French, German, or Russian. This polyglot bibliography, the first of its kind, contains over 2,600 entries, is enhanced by a vast number of additional bibliographic notes leading to reviews and related resources, and is accompanied by both an author and a subject index.

Wim Delvoye written by Wim Delvoye and has been published by Rectapublishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001 with Art categories.

Borrowing its name from the ancient sewer in Rome, Belgian conceptualist Wim Delvoye's new and improved "Cloaca" is a room-sized shit-making machine whose bowels process two meals a day, serving up a mouthful of complex themes: scatalogy and disgust, high and low culture, man as machine and vice-versa, and the inversion of art semiotics. Many of these same concerns are processed in Delvoye's other work, like the life-sized carved walnut replica of a cement truck, the wood cabinet stocked with 32 circular saw blades painted with scenes in Delft China blue, and a herd of pigs tatooed by Antwerp's finest needle-men. Feces and other anal subjects are parsed in accompanying essays by such luminaries as Milan Kundera, Gerardo Mosquera, Dan Cameron, Georges Bataille and Salvador Dali.
