Hand block-printed on textile, this limited-edition artists' book consists of a sequence of folding panels, designed to invoke pre-modern - particularly Asian - traditions of bookmaking. At the same time, the panels recall and recreate a Mata-Ni-Pachedi - the ritual 'Cloth of the Mother Goddess' - and tell the story of its origins. The textile book is accompanied by a film on the artist and his art tradition. The tactility of the book, invoking the labour and craft that have gone into its creation, is offset by the digital documentary which brings in context and history; together, the juxtaposition of the two approaches expands the frontiers of the book form, while deepening the viewer's enjoyment and understanding of the art tradition. The images featured in the book have been painted by Jagdish Chitara, who belongs to the Waghari community of artisans from Gujarat in western India. Poor and marginalised, they paint and block-print votive textiles for other so-called outcaste communities, equally disenfranchised in the Hindu caste hierarchy. Worshippers who are barred from entering temples offer a painted image of their particular guardian goddess to herself, in the form of a textile shrine. This poignant tradition, deemed low, in fact, expresses a sublime conception of the power of art: gifting a piece of creation to the creator is considered the highest form of worship. This is a notion of transcendence that appears to stretch across cultures and times.

The decisions of the Indian State in the last decade have put India into a high growth trajectory - not just in terms of economic growth but also in the geopolitical, social and developmental domains. India’s growth story and development policies have become a beacon for other developing countries. The position that India is in today is a result of all the aforementioned policy decisions. However, through our interactions with youth in the age group of 18 to 35 years, we realised that they lack this background understanding of how their lives are impacted and improved by the decisions of the Indian State. To address this gap, we decided to write this book. Our book will help you understand what the challenges were faced by India in the geopolitical, governance, cultural, women & youth and climate fronts and how the policies of the Indian State have attempted to solve these challenges. Consequently, the book is divided into five sections: Geopolitics, Digitalisation & Governance, Decolonisation of Indian Ethos, Women & Youth and Climate & Sustainability. We have also attempted to suggest how the policy framework in these domains can be improved and we would very much like the readers to engage with us over them. India is roaring today! And this book is an attempt to explain to the readers, what is making India roar towards glory.

In the realm of trade, there exists a long tradition of labelling products with the emphasis on their place of origin to convey their quality. These products with Geographical Indications (GIs) tag, in the parlance of intellectual property rights, indicate the link between the geographic location and the product and represent the collective rights of the territory-specific communities that are engaged in the production of that commodity. With its entry into the World Trade Organization, India has implemented GI within a legal framework. Through select case studies of products like textiles and crafts in South India, Regional Products and Rural Livelihoods looks at the ramifications of GI implementation at macro and micro levels. It explores the involvement of stakeholders with respect to the reputation of a place/community and the institutional challenges that emerge in the process of GI implementation. This volume highlights the need for collective action by stakeholders to actualize economic gains through GI and analyses its possible outcomes, such as improved livelihoods for producers and authentic products for the consumers.

Worldly Affiliations written by Sonal Khullar and has been published by Univ of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-05-02 with Art categories.

The purpose of art, the Paris-trained artist Amrita Sher-Gil wrote in 1936, is to "create the forms of the future” by “draw[ing] its inspiration from the present.” Through art, new worlds can be imagined into existence as artists cultivate forms of belonging and networks of association that oppose colonialist and nationalist norms. Drawing on Edward Said’s notion of “affiliation” as a critical and cultural imperative against empire and nation-state, Worldly Affiliations traces the emergence of a national art world in twentieth-century India and emphasizes its cosmopolitan ambitions and orientations. Sonal Khullar focuses on four major Indian artists—Sher-Gil, Maqbool Fida Husain, K. G. Subramanyan, and Bhupen Khakhar—situating their careers within national and global histories of modernism and modernity. Through a close analysis of original artwork, archival materials, artists’ writing, and period criticism, Khullar provides a vivid historical account of the state and stakes of artistic practice in India from the late colonial through postcolonial periods. She discusses the shifting terms of Indian artists’ engagement with the West—an urgent yet fraught project in the wake of British colonialism—and to a lesser extent with African and Latin American cultural movements such as Négritude and Mexican muralism. Written in a lucid and engaging style, this book links artistic developments in India to newly emerging histories of modern art in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Drawing on original research in the twenty-first-century art world, Khullar shows the persistence of modernism in contemporary art from India and compares its function to Walter Benjamin’s ruin. In the work of contemporary artists from India, modernism is the ground from which to imagine futures. This richly illustrated study juxtaposes little-known, rarely seen, or previously unpublished works of modern and contemporary art with historical works, popular or mass-reproduced images, and documentary photographs. Its innovative art program renders newly visible the aesthetic and political achievements of Indian modernism.

Hinduism And The Religious Arts written by Heather Elgood and has been published by A&C Black this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000-04-01 with Religion categories.

The roots between the Hindu religion and the wider culture are deep and uniquely complex. No study of either ancient or contemporary Indian culture can be undertaken without a clear understanding of Hindu visual arts and their sources in religious belief and practice. Defining what is meant by religion - no such term exists in Sanskrit - and what is understood by Hindu ideals of beauty, Heather Elgood provides the best synthesis and critical study of recent scholarship on the topic. In addition, this book offers critical background information for anyone interested in the social and anthropological roots of artistic creativity, as well as the rites, practices and beliefs of the hundreds of millions of Hindus in the world today.
