I am very happy to have this opportunity to present the work of Boris Mirkin, a distinguished Russian scholar in the areas of data analysis and decision making methodologies. The monograph is devoted entirely to clustering, a discipline dispersed through many theoretical and application areas, from mathematical statistics and combina torial optimization to biology, sociology and organizational structures. It compiles an immense amount of research done to date, including many original Russian de velopments never presented to the international community before (for instance, cluster-by-cluster versions of the K-Means method in Chapter 4 or uniform par titioning in Chapter 5). The author's approach, approximation clustering, allows him both to systematize a great part of the discipline and to develop many in novative methods in the framework of optimization problems. The optimization methods considered are proved to be meaningful in the contexts of data analysis and clustering. The material presented in this book is quite interesting and stimulating in paradigms, clustering and optimization. On the other hand, it has a substantial application appeal. The book will be useful both to specialists and students in the fields of data analysis and clustering as well as in biology, psychology, economics, marketing research, artificial intelligence, and other scientific disciplines. This textbook provides a solid mathematical basis for understanding popular data science algorithms for clustering and classification and shows that an in-depth understanding of the mathematics powering these algorithms gives insight into the underlying data. It presents a step-by-step derivation of these algorithms, outlining their implementation from scratch in a computationally sound way. Mathematics of Data Science: A Computational Approach to Clustering and Classification proposes different ways of visualizing high-dimensional data to unveil hidden internal structures, and nearly every chapter includes graphical explanations and computed examples using publicly available data sets to highlight similarities and differences among the algorithms. This self-contained book is geared toward advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students in the mathematical sciences, engineering, and computer science and can be used as the main text in a semester course. Researchers in any application area where data science methods are used will also find the book of interest. No advanced mathematical or statistical background is assumed.

This unique compendium gives an updated presentation of clustering, one of the most challenging tasks in machine learning. The book provides a unitary presentation of classical and contemporary algorithms ranging from partitional and hierarchical clustering up to density-based clustering, clustering of categorical data, and spectral clustering. Most of the mathematical background is provided in appendices, highlighting algebraic and complexity theory, in order to make this volume as self-contained as possible. A substantial number of exercises and supplements makes this a useful reference textbook for researchers and students.

The present volume contains a selection of papers presented at the Eighth Conference of the International Federation of Classification Societies (IFCS) which was held in Cracow, Poland, July 16-19, 2002. All originally submitted papers were subject to a reviewing process by two independent referees, a procedure which resulted in the selection of the 53 articles presented in this volume. These articles relate to theoretical investigations as well as to practical applications and cover a wide range of topics in the broad domain of classifi cation, data analysis and related methods. If we try to classify the wealth of problems, methods and approaches into some representative (partially over lapping) groups, we find in particular the following areas: • Clustering • Cluster validation • Discrimination • Multivariate data analysis • Statistical methods • Symbolic data analysis • Consensus trees and phylogeny • Regression trees • Neural networks and genetic algorithms • Applications in economics, medicine, biology, and psychology. Given the international orientation of IFCS conferences and the leading role of IFCS in the scientific world of classification, clustering and data anal ysis, this volume collects a representative selection of current research and modern applications in this field and serves as an up-to-date information source for statisticians, data analysts, data mining specialists and computer scientists.

Classification and Clustering documents the proceedings of the Advanced Seminar on Classification and Clustering held in Madison, Wisconsin on May 3-5, 1976. This compilation discusses the relationship between multidimensional scaling and clustering, distribution problems in clustering, and botryology of botryology. The graph theoretic techniques for cluster analysis algorithms, data dependent clustering techniques, and linguistic approach to pattern recognition are also elaborated. This text likewise covers the discriminant analysis when scale contamination is present in the initial sample and statistical basis of computerized diagnosis using the electrocardiogram. Other topics include the simple histogram method for nonparametric classification and optimal smoothing of density estimates. This book is intended for mathematicians, biological scientists, social scientists, computer scientists, statisticians, and engineers interested in classification and clustering.

Cluster analysis is an unsupervised process that divides a set of objects into homogeneous groups. This book starts with basic information on cluster analysis, including the classification of data and the corresponding similarity measures, followed by the presentation of over 50 clustering algorithms in groups according to some specific baseline methodologies such as hierarchical, center-based, and search-based methods. As a result, readers and users can easily identify an appropriate algorithm for their applications and compare novel ideas with existing results. The book also provides examples of clustering applications to illustrate the advantages and shortcomings of different clustering architectures and algorithms. Application areas include pattern recognition, artificial intelligence, information technology, image processing, biology, psychology, and marketing. Readers also learn how to perform cluster analysis with the C/C++ and MATLAB programming languages.

This research book explores the adaptation of traditional Entity Linking techniques to Mathematical Entity Linking (MathEL) for STEM disciplines, addressing the limitations of current Information Retrieval methods in handling mathematical expressions. By developing and evaluating novel MathEL approaches using AI, Machine Learning, and the Wikidata Knowledge Graph, significant progress is achieved in areas such as Formula Concept recognition, semantic formula search, mathematical question answering, physics exam question generation, and STEM document classification. The study also introduces a suite of open-source Wikimedia MathEL tools, including AnnoMathTeX, MathQA, and PhysWikiQuiz, designed to advance Mathematical Information Retrieval and support innovative applications in academic and educational contexts.

Data Mining And Mathematical Programming written by Panos M. Pardalos and has been published by American Mathematical Soc. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-04-09 with Computers categories.
Data mining aims at finding interesting, useful or profitable information in very large databases. The enormous increase in the size of available scientific and commercial databases (data avalanche) as well as the continuing and exponential growth in performance of present day computers make data mining a very active field. In many cases, the burgeoning volume of data sets has grown so large that it threatens to overwhelm rather than enlighten scientists. Therefore, traditional methods are revised and streamlined, complemented by many new methods to address challenging new problems. Mathematical Programming plays a key role in this endeavor. It helps us to formulate precise objectives (e.g., a clustering criterion or a measure of discrimination) as well as the constraints imposed on the solution (e.g., find a partition, a covering or a hierarchy in clustering). It also provides powerful mathematical tools to build highly performing exact or approximate algorithms. This book is based on lectures presented at the workshop on "Data Mining and Mathematical Programming" (October 10-13, 2006, Montreal) and will be a valuable scientific source of information to faculty, students, and researchers in optimization, data analysis and data mining, as well as people working in computer science, engineering and applied mathematics.
