The book is devoted to the mathematical foundations of nonextensive statistical mechanics. This is the first book containing the systematic presentation of the mathematical theory and concepts related to nonextensive statistical mechanics, a current generalization of Boltzmann-Gibbs statistical mechanics introduced in 1988 by one of the authors and based on a nonadditive entropic functional extending the usual Boltzmann-Gibbs-von Neumann-Shannon entropy. Main mathematical tools like the q-exponential function, q-Gaussian distribution, q-Fourier transform, q-central limit theorems, and other related objects are discussed rigorously with detailed mathematical rational. The book also contains recent results obtained in this direction and challenging open problems. Each chapter is accompanied with additional useful notes including the history of development and related bibliographies for further reading.

This book focuses on nonextensive statistical mechanics, a current generalization of Boltzmann-Gibbs (BG) statistical mechanics. Conceived nearly 150 years ago by Maxwell, Boltzmann and Gibbs, the BG theory, one of the greatest monuments of contemporary physics, exhibits many impressive successes in physics, chemistry, mathematics, and computational sciences. Presently, several thousands of publications by scientists around the world have been dedicated to its nonextensive generalization. A variety of applications have emerged in complex systems and its mathematical grounding is by now well advanced. Since the first edition release thirteen years ago, there has been a vast amount of new results in the field, all of which have been incorporated in this comprehensive second edition. Heavily revised and updated with new sections and figures, the second edition remains the go-to text on the subject. A pedagogical introduction to the BG theory concepts and their generalizations – nonlinear dynamics, extensivity of the nonadditive entropy, global correlations, generalization of the standard CLT’s, complex networks, among others – is presented in this book, as well as a selection of paradigmatic applications in various sciences together with diversified experimental verifications of some of its predictions. Introduction to Nonextensive Statistical Mechanics is suitable for students and researchers with an interest in complex systems and statistical physics.

2014 Reprint of 1949 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. The translation of this important work brings to the American mathematician and physicist a useful work of statistical mechanics. It offers a precise and mathematically satisfactory formulation of the problems of statistical mechanics and provides the analytic tools needed to replace many of the cumbersome concepts and devices commonly found in more basic works on the subject. And above all, it furnishes the mathematician approaching the subject for the first time with a logical, step-by-step introduction, written in mathematical terms, to aid in mastering the subject in the shortest possible time. Contents Include: Geometry and kinematics of the phase space. -- Ergodic problem. -- Reduction to the problem of the theory of probability. -- Application of the central limit theorem. -- Ideal monatomic gas. -- The foundation of thermodynamics. -- Dispersion and the distributions of sum functions. Aleksandr Khinchin was a Soviet mathematician and one of the most significant people in the Soviet school of probability theory.

This book presents a mathematically rigorous approach to the main ideas and phenomena of statistical physics. The introduction addresses the physical motivation, focusing on the basic concept of modern statistical physics, that is the notion of Gibbsian random fields. Properties of Gibbsian fields are analysed in two ranges of physical parameters: "regular" (corresponding to high-temperature and low-density regimes) where no phase transition is exhibited, and "singular" (low temperature regimes) where such transitions occur. Next, a detailed approach to the analysis of the phenomena of phase transitions of the first kind, the Pirogov-Sinai theory, is presented. The author discusses this theory in a general way and illustrates it with the example of a lattice gas with three types of particles. The conclusion gives a brief review of recent developments arising from this theory. The volume is written for the beginner, yet advanced students will benefit from it as well. The book will serve nicely as a supplementary textbook for course study. The prerequisites are an elementary knowledge of mechanics, probability theory and functional analysis.

Time asymmetric phenomena are successfully predicted by statistical mechanics. Yet the foundations of this theory are surprisingly shaky. Its explanation for the ease of mixing milk with coffee is incomplete, and even implies that un-mixing them should be just as easy. In this book the authors develop a new conceptual foundation for statistical mechanics that addresses this difficulty. Explaining the notions of macrostates, probability, measurement, memory, and the arrow of time in statistical mechanics, they reach the startling conclusion that Maxwell's Demon, the famous perpetuum mobile, is consistent with the fundamental physical laws. Mathematical treatments are avoided where possible, and instead the authors use novel diagrams to illustrate the text. This is a fascinating book for graduate students and researchers interested in the foundations and philosophy of physics.
