This volume is intended to supply teachers with sample assessment items that produce an accurate picture of their students’ thinking, to guide teachers’ instructional decisions and to serve as models for creating original assessment items. The items are selected or modified from state, national and international assessments; textbooks; private collections of mathematics educators and originally written problems. The types of items include multiple choice, short response and extended response. All items either require students to explain their answers or ask comparative questions among answer choices. Some items are scaffolded so that all students have access to them; only a few items require the use of a calculator. Selected samples of student work either exemplify a correct response or typify certain categories of student errors.

The California Assessment Program (CAP) administers tests to all public school students at certain grade levels, compiles the results, and provides information that allows educators to judge the effectiveness of their programs and make improvements. This sampler describes the types of assessment that CAP proposes to respond to the needed changes that reflect the recent curricular reforms in schools throughout California. The four types of assessment planned for CAP are: (1) open-ended problems; (2) enhanced multiple-choice questions; (3) investigations; and (4) portfolios. These modes of assessment are recommended for adaption for teachers of all grade levels and teachers are encouraged to use the examples in the booklet to enhance classroom instruction and to develop tasks for student assessment. After chapter 1 that describes the changes in assessment, the sampler is divided into six major parts: chapter 2, "Assessment of Mathematical Power"; chapter 3, "Types of Assessment"; chapter 4, "Performance Standards and Judging a Student's Work", chapter 5, "Implementation of Authentic Assessment in Your School," chapter 6, "Sample Problems." A "Participation and Feedback" page is given to ask participants' comments and suggestions about the sampler. (11 selected references) (MDH)

The PRIME Leadership Framework describes the leadership principles and action indicators that the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics endorses and that all mathematics education leaders should aspire toward to create equity and excellence in math education for all students. The PRIME Leadership Framework does not describe or endorse any specific leadership style. The framework is intended to engage leaders in conversations about what should be the focus of individual and collective leadership actions, energy, and effort, and seeks to expand the role of teacher leaders in mathematics education. PRIME is a what to do document and not a prescriptive how to do or how to be document. Accordingly, the PRIME Framework views leadership responsibility as founded upon three essential themes: 1. Success for every student, teacher, and leader 2. Research-informed teacher actions 3. Teacher collaboration and professional learning The Framework is based upon the following four essential principles of leadership that drive an improved future for mathematics education: 1. Equity Leadership to ensure high expectations and access to meaningful mathematics learning for every student. 2. Teaching and Learning Leadership to ensure high expectations and access to meaningful mathematics instruction every day. 3. Curriculum Leadership to ensure relevant and meaningful mathematics in every lesson. 4. Assessment Leadership to ensure timely, accurate monitoring of student learning and adjustment of teacher instruction for improved student learning.

Provide targeted mathematics instruction for every child. These books combine formative assessment with practical activities to differentiate the elementary classroom. The formative assessments include student work samples at varying levels. The authors...Illustrate the distinction between a "traditional" assessment and an "enhanced" assessment. Describe specific differentiated activities so each student may consistently receive instruction geared to specific need. Provide teachers with "Questions to Assess" to determine what each child understands about the math concept. Show how to move students to higher-level mathematics thinking and to apply math concepts. Include extension activities to offer challenging work for children who have achieved skill mastery level. Each activity states a goal, the materials needed, a description of the activity, as well as specific questions to ask students. The assessments and activities are aligned with the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics and the expectations described by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. This resource will help teachers, principals, and curriculum directors identify students' levels of understanding about mathematics and provide concrete resources for remediation, instruction, and enrichment. These books are also an excellent resource for use during workshops and in-class observations. Provide targeted mathematics instruction for every child.
