The PRIME Leadership Framework describes the leadership principles and action indicators that the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics endorses and that all mathematics education leaders should aspire toward to create equity and excellence in math education for all students. The PRIME Leadership Framework does not describe or endorse any specific leadership style. The framework is intended to engage leaders in conversations about what should be the focus of individual and collective leadership actions, energy, and effort, and seeks to expand the role of teacher leaders in mathematics education. PRIME is a what to do document and not a prescriptive how to do or how to be document. Accordingly, the PRIME Framework views leadership responsibility as founded upon three essential themes: 1. Success for every student, teacher, and leader 2. Research-informed teacher actions 3. Teacher collaboration and professional learning The Framework is based upon the following four essential principles of leadership that drive an improved future for mathematics education: 1. Equity Leadership to ensure high expectations and access to meaningful mathematics learning for every student. 2. Teaching and Learning Leadership to ensure high expectations and access to meaningful mathematics instruction every day. 3. Curriculum Leadership to ensure relevant and meaningful mathematics in every lesson. 4. Assessment Leadership to ensure timely, accurate monitoring of student learning and adjustment of teacher instruction for improved student learning.

In this book, the NCSM suggests that student achievement in mathematics is unlikely to improve significantly beyond current local, regional, state, national, or provincial levels until mathematics education leaders assume and exercise professional responsibility and accountability for their own practice and the practice of the teachers they lead. Accordingly, this book identifies the specific principles, indicators, knowledge, and skills necessary to lead others beyond the current reality of student performance in mathematics into a focused, more equitable, and successful future. The framework identifies the key leadership principles in four domains of mathematics leadership: equity, teaching and learning, curriculum, and assessment. It goes on to identify three specific indicators of leadership in each domain. Each indicator is further broken down into specific actions that fall on a continuum of three stages of leadership growth: 1) knowing and modeling leadership; 2) collaborating and implementing structures for shared leadership on the local level; and 3) advocating and systematizing improvements into the wider educational community. The framework concludes with tools for reflection, self-evaluation, and discussion.-- Back cover.

Teaching someone to lead is like teaching someone to swim - you can show them a movie or give them a book to read, but if you throw them in a pool they drown anyway. You must get in the pool with them and support them while they flounder until they finally relax and float. What's the difference between leadership and management? Clearly you need to do both, and in fact without good management skills you are much less likely to become a good leader. This book is intended to be a companion for people learning to lead. What I hope to do in this book is first, to present clearly and concisely some of the challenges of leadership, and in doing so reassure you that what you may be experiencing has likely been faced before and is not unique to you. Second, to provide a basic framework and tools for helping to manage those challenges - thereby freeing you to focus on the more important task of leading. This framework is divided into execution and strategy. Here execution is focused on developing a management system, decision- making, and financial acumen. The strategy discussion is focused on taking strategy to action, leading change, and relationship management. Finally, and most importantly, I provide a section on leading people and introduce the axioms on leadership - a set of insights distilled from my experience that will serve as a companion as you develop into a better leader. The approach taken here is intentionally brief and to the point, and my hope is to provide practical knowledge. Many of the topics may warrant additional reading. I leave that to the discretion of the reader, and where relevant I've added references to aid in that endeavor. The approach is also intended to serve as a companion - that is, to provide the developing leader somewhere to turn for advice.
