The frame of assessment that this book sets for itself is strictly defined: to disentangle and follow the trends in mathematical education at the primary and middle school levels in China from 1860 to 1970, with particular emphasis on developments undertaken by the Communist government. The documentation that supports this effort is equally specific—it includes syllabi, textbook lists, subject scope descriptions and subject sequences, sample lesson plans, and examinations. But in addition to fulfilling this program, the book explicitly explores several implications of much wider import. For one, since modern technology is solidly based on mathematics, an index to the development of China's technical skills can be inferred from an examination of mathematical education over the last decades, and some insight into China's potential in the next generation can be gained by studying the way mathematics is being taught to the primary and middle school pupils of today. For another, the book examines the effects of Western mathematical concepts and teaching methods—imported mainly from America during the Republican and Kuomintang periods, and from Russia during the early Communist period—on the ancient mathematical tradition embedded in Chinese culture. The book also cites the lessons that the Chinese experience in this educational area may have for other developing countries. Among the other subjects examined are the present effects of the "Great Cultural Revolution" on mathematics instruction and the extent to which courses in "pure" mathematics may have been diluted or tinctured by the introduction of political indoctrination; the influence of Soviet models on the establishment of "Olympiad" competitions to seek out mathematical talent and of special schools for students with such talent; the ways in which "practical applications" are being introduced into mathematics teaaching; the efforts the Chinese have made to solve their teacher shorta≥ and the extent to which psychological processes of mathematics learning are being considered in developing programs of instruction.

In 1999, Liping Ma published her book Knowing and Teaching Elementary Mathematics: Teachers' Understanding of Fundamental Mathematics in the United States and China, which probed the kinds of knowledge that elementary school teachers need to convey mathematical concepts and procedures effectively to their students. Later that year, Roger Howe, a member of the U.S. National Commission on Mathematics Instruction (USNC/MI), reviewed the book for the Notices of the American Mathematical Society, concluding that it 'has lessons for all educational policymakers.' Intrigued by the idea of superrank teachers, the USNC/MI sponsored a workshop entitled 'The Teacher Development Continuum in the United States and China'. The purpose of the workshop was to examine the structure of the mathematics teaching profession in the United States and China. The main presentations and discussion from the workshop are summarized in this volume.

This book seeks to illustrate the research on mathematics competencies and disposition in China according to the conceptual development and empirical investigation perspective. Mathematics education in China has a distinguishing feature a focus of attention to mathematical competency. Paradoxically, there has not been an explicit, refined, and measurable evaluation system in place to assess mathematical competency in China. While academic achievement surveys or evaluations are common, these can only give an overall conclusion about mathematical thinking skills or problem solving abilities. In response to this deficiency, China is beginning to carry out national projects that emphasize defining both a conceptual framework on core competencies in school mathematics and developing a corresponding assessment framework. Thus, the main focus of this volume is the current investigations of different mathematics competencies and mathematical disposition of Chinese students, with the aim of promoting interaction between domestic and international student performance assessment, to provide a more comprehensive understanding of mathematics competencies and disposition in mainland China, and to stimulate innovative new directions in research. The primary audience of this volume is the large group of researchers interested in mathematics competencies, mathematics teaching and learning in China, or comparative studies, or the relation of the three. This book is a product of love and respect. If that sounds rather odd I initially apologise, but let me explain why I use those words. The original manuscript was of course Freudenthal’s, but his colleagues have carried the project through to its conclusion with love for the man, and his ideas, and with a respect developed over years of communal effort. Their invitation to me to write this Preface e- bles me to pay my respects to the great man, although I am probably incurring his wrath for writing a Preface for his book without his permission! I just hope he understands the feelings of all colleagues engaged in this particular project. Hans Freudenthal died on October 13th, 1990 when this book project was well in hand. In fact he wrote to me in April 1988, saying “I am thinking about a new book. I have got the sub-title (China Lectures) though I still lack a title”. I was astonished. He had retired in 1975, but of course he kept working. Then in 1985 we had been helping him celebrate his 80th birthday, and although I said in an Editorial Statement in Educational Studies in Mathematics (ESM) at the time “we look forward to him enjoying many more years of non-retirement” I did not expect to see another lengthy manuscript.
