A obra conta em 40 crônicas as histórias das escolas que serviram de base para a atual configuração do carnaval carioca: Acadêmicos do Salgueiro, Estação Primeira de Mangueira, Portela, Salgueiro e Império Serrano. Os autores são Fábio Fabato (organizador da coleção), Gustavo Gasparani, João Gustavo Melo, Luis Carlos Magalhães e Luiz Antonio Simas. O título é a continuação da série que se iniciou em 2012 com As Três Irmãs: como um trio de penetras "arrombou a festa", a carnavalização da ascensão de Beija-Flor de Nilópolis, Imperatriz Leopoldinense e Mocidade Independente de Padre Miguel no cenário das grandes escolas. O segundo livro, As Titias da Folia – O brilho maduro de escolas de samba de alta idade, vencedor do Prêmio Edison Carneiro de melhor livro de não ficção sobre carnaval (lançado em 2014), trouxe as memórias de Unidos da Tijuca, Vila Isabel, Viradouro e Estácio.
