The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider has performed a systematic study of K0S and K*0 meson production at midrapidity in p+p, d+Au, and Cu+Cu collisions at sqrt SNN = 200 GeV. The K0S and K*0 mesons are reconstructed via their K0S and [pi]0(2!gamma][gamma])[pi]0 (2!gamma][gamma]) and K*0 2!K "[pi]" decay modes, respectively. The measured transverse-momentum spectra are used to determine the nuclear modification factor of K0S and K*0 mesons in d+Au and Cu+Cu collisions at different centralities. In the d+Au collisions, the nuclear modification factor of K0S and K*0 mesons is almost constant as a function of transverse momentum and is consistent with unity showing that cold-nuclear-matter effects do not play a significant role in the measured kinematic range. In Cu+Cu collisions, within the uncertainties no nuclear modification is registered in peripheral collisions. In central collisions, both mesons show suppression relative to the expectations from the p+p yield scaled by the number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions in the Cu+Cu system. In the pT range 2-5 GeV/c, the strange mesons (K0S, K*0) similarly to the.

The STAR collaboration at RHIC presents measurements of J/[psi] → e+e− at mid-rapidity and high transverse momentum (p{sub T} > 5 GeV/c) in p+p and central Cu+Cu collisions at √sNN = 200 GeV. The inclusive J/[psi] production cross section for Cu+Cu collisions is found to be consistent at high p{sub T} with the binary collision-scaled cross section for p+p collisions, in contrast to previous measurements at lower p{sub T}, where a suppression of J/[psi] production is observed relative to the expectation from binary scaling. Azimuthal correlations of J/[psi] with charged hadrons in p+p collisions provide an estimate of the contribution of B-meson decays to J/[psi] production of 13% ± 5%.

J/Psi production has been measured by the PHENIX experiment, one of the two major experiments at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) in p + p, d + Au, Au + Au and Cu + Cu collisions at the center of mass energy per nucleon (sqrt {s_{NN}}) of 200 GeV. The analysis of the Cu + Cu data is the focus of this dissertation.

A search for the quantum chromodynamics (QCD) critical point was performed by the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, using dynamical fluctuations of unlike particle pairs. Heavy ion collisions were studied over a large range of collision energies with homogeneous acceptance and excellent particle identification, covering a significant range in the QCD phase diagram where a critical point may be located. Dynamical K?, p?, and Kp fluctuations as measured by the STAR experiment in central 0–5% Au+Au collisions from center-of-mass collision energies √sNN=7.7 to 200 GeV are presented. The observable ?dyn was used to quantify the magnitude of the dynamical fluctuations in event-by-event measurements of the K?, p?, and Kp pairs. The energy dependences of these fluctuations from central 0–5% Au+Au collisions all demonstrate a smooth evolution with collision energy.

Measurements of bottomonium production in heavy-ion and p+p collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) are presented. The inclusive yield of the three [Upsilon] states, [Upsilon](1S + 2S + 3S), was measured in the PHENIX experiment via electron-positron decay pairs at midrapidity for Au+Au and p+p collisions at \(\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}=200\) GeV. The [Upsilon](1S + 2S + 3S) 2!ee− differential cross section at midrapidity was found to be Beed[sigma]/dy = 108 ± 38 (stat) ± 15 (syst) ± 11 (luminosity) pb in p+p collisions. The nuclear modification factor in the 30% most central Au+Au collisions indicates a suppression of the total [Upsilon] state yield relative to the extrapolation from p+p collision data. Thus, the suppression is consistent with measurements at higher energies by the CMS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider.

This thesis presents the first J/psi production analysis of Au+Au reactions at forward rapidity at [square root]sNN = 200 GeV. In the second year of RHIC running, design energy was achieved in the collisions of both Au+Au ions and proton+proton reactions. The production of the J/psi is measured by the PHENIX experiment in Au+Au collisions as well as in proton-proton collisions. The scientific goal is to investigate the nature of hot, dense nuclear matter capitalizing on the unique properties of the J/psi as a probe of this matter. Recent experimental results by the NA50 collaboration at CERN strongly deviate from the conventional picture that successfully describes data at lower energies. The importance of such a measurement is demonstrated by the wide spectrum of theoretical explanations concerning the existing data. The merits of these models will be explored in a systematic and comprehensive study of the J/psi and open charm in collisions of a variety of species and energy. A survey of the theoretical models is presented and the relevant open charm and J/psi PHENIX measurements are compared.

The short-lived K(892)* resonance provides an efficient tool to probe properties of the hot and dense medium produced in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. We report measurements of K* in √s{sub NN} = 200 GeV Au+Au and p+p collisions reconstructed via its hadronic decay channels K(892)*° → K? and K(892)*{sup +-} → K{sub S}°?{sup +-} using the STAR detector at RHIC. The K*° mass has been studied as function of p{sub T} in minimum bias p + p and central Au+Au collisions. The K* p{sub T} spectra for minimum bias p + p interactions and for Au+Au collisions in different centralities are presented. The K*/K ratios for all centralities in Au+Au collisions are found to be significantly lower than the ratio in minimum bias p + p collisions, indicating the importance of hadronic interactions between chemical and kinetic freeze-outs. The nuclear modification factor of K* at intermediate p{sub T} is similar to that of K{sub S}°, but different from?. This establishes a baryon-meson effect over a mass effect in the particle production at intermediate p{sub T} (2
