A sample of[approximately] 400 B[sub d][sup 0]/[bar B][sub d][sup 0][r-arrow] J/[psi]K[sub s][sup 0] decays collected in[bar p]p collisions by the CDF detector is used to directly measure the CP-violation parameter sin (2[beta]). They find sin(2[beta])= 0.79[sub[minus]0.44][sup+ 0.41], favoring the standard model expectation of a large CP violation in this B[sup 0] decay mode.

In the 110 pb[sup -1] Run I data sample, using three complementary flavor-tagging algorithms CDF has made a new measurement of the CP-violating asymmetry sin(2[beta])=0.79[sup +0.41][sub -0.44], This corresponds to the limit sin(2[beta])>-0.08 at 95% confidence level. This result agrees well with predictions from indirect constraints based on fits of elements of the CKM matrix.

The CP-violating parameter sin 2[beta] is directly measured using 110 pb[sup[minus]1] of data accumulated with the CDF detector at the Fermilab[anti p]p Tevatron collider operating at[radical]s= 1.8 TeV. The signal consists of 395[+-] 31 B[sub d][sup 0][r[underscore]arrow] J/[psi] K[sub s] events. Three tagging methods are used to identify the type of B meson at production (B[sub d][sup 0] or[anti B][sub d][sup 0]). From the CP asymmetry, sin 2[beta] is measured to be 0.79[sub[minus]0.44][sup+0.41], consistent with Standard Model predictions. Sin 2[beta] is in the interval 0[lt] sin2[beta][lt] 1 at the 93% confidence level.

This analysis demonstrates the feasibility of studying CP violation in the B[sup 0]-[anti B][sup 0] system at a hadron collider. By applying the methods used in this analysis, future, higher-statistics experiments should be able to tightly constrain the parameters of the Standard Model.

A major goal of experimental particle physics over the next decade is to measure the sides and angles of the Unitarity triangle redundantly, and as precisely as possible. Overconstraining the triangle will test the Cabbibo-Kobayashi-Maskawa model of quark mixing. The CDF collaboration, due to begin a second run in March 2001 with major upgrades to both the accelerator and the detector, will study the angle[beta] using B[sup 0] decays, the angle[gamma] using B[sup 0] and B[sub s][sup 0] decays, and a side of the triangle through the observation of B[sub s][sup 0]--[bar B][sub s][sup 0] mixing. Projected sensitivities are driven mostly by previous measurements using data from the first run. One highlight of the Run I B physics program is a measurement of the CP violating parameter sin 2[beta]= 0.79[sub[minus]0.44][sup+0.41], based on a tagged sample of 400 B[sup 0] decays in the mode B[sub 0]/[bar B][sup 0][r-arrow] J/[psi]K[sub s][sup 0]. The technology of flavor tagging, used here as well as in numerous B[sup 0]-[bar B][sup 0] mixing analyses in run I, is crucial and will be augmented in Run II with better particle identification capabilities. Exclusive all-hadronic final states will enter the data sample in Run II through a new displaced track trigger.

Between 1992 to 1996, the CDF and D0 detectors each collected data samples exceeding 100 pb[sup[minus]1] of p[bar p] collisions at[radical]s= 1.8 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron. These data sets led to a large number of precision measurements of the properties of B hadrons including lifetimes, masses, neutral B meson flavor oscillations, and relative branching fractions, and to the discovery of the B[sub 0] meson. Perhaps the most exciting result was the first look at the CP violation parameter sin ([vert-bar]2[beta])[vert-bar] using the world's largest sample of fully reconstructed B[sup 0]/[bar B][sup 0][r-arrow] J/[psi]K[sub s][sup 0] decays. A summary of this result is presented here. In the year 2000, the Tevatron will recommence p[bar p] collisions with an over order of magnitude expected increased in integrated luminosity (1 fb[sup[minus]1] per year). The CDF and D0 detectors will have undergone substantial upgrades, particularly in the tracking detectors and the triggers. With these enhancements, the Tevatron B physics program includes precision measurements of sin(2[beta]) and B[sub s][sup 0] flavor oscillations, as well as studies of rare B decays that are sensitive to new physics. The studies of B[sub s][sup 0] mesons will be particularly interesting as this physics will be unique to the Tevatron during the first half of the next decade.
