A sample of[approximately] 400 B[sub d][sup 0]/[bar B][sub d][sup 0][r-arrow] J/[psi]K[sub s][sup 0] decays collected in[bar p]p collisions by the CDF detector is used to directly measure the CP-violation parameter sin (2[beta]). They find sin(2[beta])= 0.79[sub[minus]0.44][sup+ 0.41], favoring the standard model expectation of a large CP violation in this B[sup 0] decay mode.

A B{sub s}° meson can oscillate into its anti-particle, the {bar B}{sub s}° meson, before decaying. CP violation in this system is made possible by the presence of amplitudes from both mixed and unmixed B{sub s}° meson decays. The CP violating phase [beta]s appears in the interference between the decay amplitudes. The quantity sin(2[beta]s) is expected to be small in the standard model. Thus, measuring a large value for sin(2[beta]s) would be an unequivocal sign of new physics participation in the B{sub s}° mixing loop diagram. In this thesis, we present a latest measurement of sin(2[beta]s), using 5.2 fb−1 of data collected at CDF from p{bar p} collisions at a center of mass energy of √s = 1.96 TeV. A time-dependent angular analysis, with the production flavor of the B{sub s}° meson identified with flavor tagging methods, is used to extract sin(2[beta]s) from ≈6500 B{sub s}° → J/[psi][phi] decays. Other parameters of interest, such as the B{sub s}° lifetime and the decay width difference [Delta][Lambda] between the heavy and light B{sub s}° mass eigenstates are determined to high precision. Also, the effect of potential contributions to the final state from B{sub s}° → J/[psi]f0 and B{sub s}° → J/[psi]K+K− decays is considered for the first time. We present 68% and 95% confidence regions in the [beta]s - [Delta][Lambda] plane. The probability that the observed central value is a fluctuation of the data from the standard model expected value of [beta]s is calculated to be 44%. The observed confidence region shows better agreement with the standard model prediction than previous measurements.

This dissertation presents a measurement of the time-dependent CP-violating asymmetries in the neutral B-meson system performed with data collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B Factory at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. The data sample used consists of 29.7 fb[sup -1] collected at the[Upsilon](4S) resonance and 3.9 fb[sup -1] collected off-resonance. We analyze three samples of fully-reconstructed B-meson decays: a sample of decays to CP eigenstates in the modes J/[psi] K[sub s][sup 0], [psi](2S) K[sub s][sup 0], [chi][sub cl] K[sub s][sup 0], and J/[psi] K*[sup 0] (822 events); as well as both charged (14304 events) and neutral (10457 events) B decays to flavor-eigenstates including D[sup (*)] and[pi]/[rho]/[alpha][sub 1]. In all cases, the proper decay time difference between the reconstructed B-meson and the recoiling B-meson is determined by measuring the separation of the two decay vertices. Furthermore, the flavor of the recoiling B-meson is tagged using a neural network algorithm. We use the flavor-eigenstate samples to calibrate both the vertexing and tagging performance. We measure the amplitude of the CP asymmetry, sin2[beta]= 0.61[+-] 0.14(stat)[+-] 0.06(syst). These results indicate the existence of indirect CP violation in the B-meson system.

In the 110 pb[sup -1] Run I data sample, using three complementary flavor-tagging algorithms CDF has made a new measurement of the CP-violating asymmetry sin(2[beta])=0.79[sup +0.41][sub -0.44], This corresponds to the limit sin(2[beta])>-0.08 at 95% confidence level. This result agrees well with predictions from indirect constraints based on fits of elements of the CKM matrix.
