Zusammenfassung: In this thesis, measurements of the W boson pair production cross section in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV are presented. A dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 22.3 /fb recorded by the ATLAS experiment in the year 2012 is used. The W bosons are identified by their decay products of exactly two leptons with opposite electrical charge, electrons or muons, and missing transverse momentum induced by their corresponding neutrinos. First, a measurement restricted to final states without hadronic jets is presented and differential fiducial cross sections, total cross sections and limits on anomalous triple gauge boson couplings are obtained. A second measurement of the fiducial cross section in association with exactly one hadronic jet is presented. The ratio of fiducial cross sections for different jet multiplicities is reported and the combined fiducial cross section is extrapolated to the total phase space.

Charming Decays Of The Higgs Z And W Bosons written by Spandan Mondal and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-06-13 with Science categories.
This book presents searches for the Higgs boson, Z boson, and W boson decaying into charm quark(s) performed with proton-proton collision data at √s = 13TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC, CERN, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb−1 and recorded between 2016 and 2018. The searches are carried out using events in which the Higgs/Z/W boson is produced in association with a leptonically-decaying Z or W boson. This thesis also discusses a novel calibration algorithm for charm jet identification that enables maximal use of the available information related to charm jets. The new method is used to correct the entire distribution expected as output when jet flavour identification algorithms are applied to jets of different flavours. The calibrated results improve over traditional efficiency measurements and help enhance the sensitivities of the Higgs, Z, and W searches. This book primarily reports on the so-called resolved-jet topology of the Higgs/Z/W boson searches, where the boson candidates are reconstructed using two separate small-radius (AK4) jets. Upon statistically combining the results of the resolved-jet search with a complementary merged-jet approach, the observed (expected) upper limit on the Higgs decay to charm quarks corresponds to 14 (7.6) times the Standard Model expectation at the 95% CL which is the most stringent direct limit to date. A significance of 5.7σ (5.9σ) over the background-only prediction is observed (expected) in case of the search for charmed Z boson decays. Only the resolved-jet topology is used in the search for charmed W decays and the observed (expected) significance is 5.6σ (5.7σ) over the background-only prediction. These mark the first observations of charmed decays of the Z and W bosons at a hadron collider experiment.

The Black Book Of Quantum Chromodynamics A Primer For The Lhc Era written by John Campbell and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-01-19 with Science categories.
The Black Book of Quantum Chromodynamics is an in-depth introduction to the particle physics of current and future experiments at particle accelerators. The book offers the reader an overview of practically all aspects of the strong interaction necessary to understand and appreciate modern particle phenomenology at the energy frontier. It assumes a working knowledge of quantum field theory at the level of introductory textbooks used for advanced undergraduate or in standard postgraduate lectures. The book expands this knowledge with an intuitive understanding of relevant physical concepts, an introduction to modern techniques, and their application to the phenomenology of the strong interaction at the highest energies. Aimed at graduate students and researchers, it also serves as a comprehensive reference for LHC experimenters and theorists. This book offers an exhaustive presentation of the technologies developed and used by practitioners in the field of fixed-order perturbation theory and an overview of results relevant for the ongoing research programme at the LHC. It includes an in-depth description of various analytic resummation techniques, which form the basis for our understanding of the QCD radiation pattern and how strong production processes manifest themselves in data, and a concise discussion of numerical resummation through parton showers, which form the basis of event generators for the simulation of LHC physics, and their matching and merging with fixed-order matrix elements. It also gives a detailed presentation of the physics behind the parton distribution functions, which are a necessary ingredient for every calculation relevant for physics at hadron colliders such as the LHC, and an introduction to non-perturbative aspects of the strong interaction, including inclusive observables such as total and elastic cross sections, and non-trivial effects such as multiple parton interactions and hadronization. The book concludes with a useful overview contextualising data from previous experiments such as the Tevatron and the Run I of the LHC which have shaped our understanding of QCD at hadron colliders.

Search For New Heavy Charged Bosons And Measurement Of High Mass Drell Yan Production In Proton Proton Collisions written by Markus Zinser and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-09-25 with Science categories.
This book presents two analyses, the first of which involves the search for a new heavy charged gauge boson, a so-called W' boson. This new gauge boson is predicted by some theories extending the Standard Model gauge group to solve some of its conceptual problems. Decays of the W' boson in final states with a lepton (l± = e± , μ±) and the corresponding (anti-)neutrino are considered. Data collected by the ATLAS experiment in 2015 at a center of mass energy of √s =13 TeV is used for the analysis. In turn, the second analysis presents a measurement of the double-differential cross section of the process pp->Z/gamma^* + X -> l^+l^- + X, including a gamma gamma induced contribution, at a center of mass energy of sqrt{s} = 8 TeV. The measurement is performed in an invariant mass region of 116 GeV to 1500 GeV as a function of invariant mass and absolute rapidity of the l^+l^-- pair, and as a function of invariant mass and pseudorapidity separation of the l^+l^-- pair. The data analyzed was recorded by the ATLAS experiment in 2012 and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 20.3/fb. It is expected that the measured cross sections are sensitive to the PDFs at very high values of the Bjorken-x scaling variable, and to the photon structure of the proton.

Physics With Electrons In The Atlas Detector written by Kurt Brendlinger and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-01-30 with Science categories.
This thesis presents two production cross-section measurements of pairs of massive bosons using final states with leptons, made with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The first measurement, performed using data collected in 2012 at center-of-mass energy √ s = 8 TeV, is the first fiducial and differential cross-section measurement of the production of the Higgs Boson when it decays to four charged leptons (electrons or muons). The second measurement is the first fiducial and inclusive production cross-section measurement of WZ pairs at center-of-mass energy √ s = 13 TeV using final states with three charged leptons. A significant portion of the thesis focuses on the methods used to identify electrons from massive boson decay—important for many flagship measurements—and on assessing the efficiency of these particle identification techniques. The chapter discussing the WZ pair cross-section measurement provides a detailed example of an estimate of lepton background in the context of an analysis with three leptons in the final state.

Electroweak Physics At The Lhc written by Matthias U. Mozer and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-03-24 with Science categories.
The book discusses the recent experimental results obtained at the LHC that involve electroweak bosons. The results are placed into an appropriate theoretical and historical context. The work pays special attention to the rising subject of hadronically decaying bosons with high boosts, documenting the state-of-the-art identification techniques and highlighting typical results. The text is not limited to electroweak physics in the strict sense, but also discusses the use of electroweak vector-bosons as tool in the study of other subjects in particle physics, such as determinations of the proton structure or the search for new exotic particles. The book is particularly well suited for graduate students, starting their thesis work on topics that involve electroweak bosons, as the book provides a comprehensive description of phenomena observable at current accelerators as well as a summary of the most relevant experimental techniques.

Multiple Parton Interactions At The Lhc written by Paolo Bartalini and has been published by World Scientific Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-11-02 with Science categories.
Many high-energy collider experiments (including the current Large Hadron Collider at CERN) involve the collision of hadrons. Hadrons are composite particles consisting of partons (quarks and gluons), and this means that in any hadron-hadron collision there will typically be multiple collisions of the constituents — i.e. multiple parton interactions (MPI). Understanding the nature of the MPI is important in terms of searching for new physics in the products of the scatters, and also in its own right to gain a greater understanding of hadron structure. This book aims at providing a pedagogical introduction and a comprehensive review of different research lines linked by an involvement of MPI phenomena. It is written by pioneers as well as young leading scientists, and reviews both experimental findings and theoretical developments, discussing also the remaining open issues.
