Wir leben in einer Zeit grundlegenden, vielfältigen und schnellen Wandels, in dessen Verlauf sich auch die Bedeutung der Kommunikationsmedien verändert. Es ist das Anliegen des vorliegenden Bandes, einen Metaprozeß "Mediatisierung von Kommunikation" theoretisch zu entwerfen und zu begründen, mit dem dieser gesellschaftliche Wandel analysiert werden kann. Der Band beruft sich dabei auf empirischen Studien über die computervermittelte Kommunikation und über die Weiterentwicklung der ‚alten' Medien. In Bezug auf diese empirischen Grundlagen wird ein handlungstheoretisch-konstruktivistisches Konzept von ‚Mediatisierung' entwickelt, in dessen Perspektive sich Einzelbeobachtungen, Ergebnisse empirischer Arbeiten und kommunikations- und medienwissenschaftliche Theoriestücke fruchtbar zusammendenken lassen.

Mediatisierungsforschung beschäftigt sich mit der Frage, wie sich Alltag und Institutionen, Kultur und Gesellschaft dadurch wandeln, dass Menschen immer mehr mit und in Bezug auf Medien handeln und kommunizieren: Dieser Prozess wird hier Mediatisierung genannt, weil Kommunikation immer häufiger in medienvermittelter und mediatisierter Form stattfindet. Für die empirische Untersuchung wird auf das Konzept der „sozialen Welten“ zurückgegriffen – die verschiedenen Lebensbereiche wie Beruf und Familie, Unterhaltung und Fernsehen, Alltag und soziale Beziehungen, Politik und Lernen sind davon alle, aber auf unterschiedliche Weise betroffen. Im DFG-geförderten Schwerpunktprogramm „Mediatisierte Welten“ untersuchen Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler unterschiedlicher Disziplinen diese Sachverhalte seit mehreren Jahren. In dem vorliegenden Band werden nun nicht primär empirische Befunde sondern übergreifende theoretische Überlegungen publiziert, die sich je auf Überlegungen und empirische Ergebnisse aus unterschiedlichen Projekten und Disziplinen ergeben.
