KMW), Veranstaltung: Einführung in die Kommunikationswissenschaft, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Seit Jahrhunderten beschäftigt sich die Epistemologie mit dem Problem des Verhältnisses von menschlicher Erkenntnis und Wirklichkeit. Dabei wurde zumeist als selbstverständlich vorausgesetzt, dass eine solche Wirklichkeit unabhängig und außerhalb des menschlichen Erkenntnisvermögens existiert: Die Wirklichkeit ist gegeben und der Mensch kann auf dem steinigen Weg der Erkenntnis Zugang zu ihr erlangen, sie erkennen. Diese Vorstellung der Erkennbarkeit der "wirklichen", "wahren" Welt kritisiert der Konstruktivismus, indem er dem Menschen die Möglichkeit des direkten Zugangs zur Wirklichkeit abspricht und Wirklichkeit bzw. das vermeintliche Wissen über sie anstatt dessen als Ergebnis von unbewussten und "unwillkürlichen" Konstruktionsprozessen im Individuum selbst - und ausschließlich dort - konzipiert. Der Mensch kann die Wirklichkeit also nicht erkennen, er bringt sie vielmehr selbst subjektiv konstruierend hervor. Ganz neu ist diese Problematisierung von Wirklichkeit und Erkenntnis in der Philosophie- und Wissenschaftsgeschichte nicht. Siegfried J. Schmidt zitiert Xenophanes und Demokrit ebenso, wie er eine Traditionslinie von Kant über Nietzsche, Simmel, Cassirer u.a. zieht. Eine Neubegründung erfuhren vorhandene konstruktivistische Ansätze jedoch v.a. durch die Arbeiten des Psychologen Ernst von Glasersfeld, des Kybernetikers Heinz von Foerster, der Biologen Humberto R. Maturana und Francisco J. Varela und im Anschluss an diese Gerhard Roth, deren neurophysiologische und kognitionswissenschaftliche Untersuchungen die bis dahin vorhandenen Ansätze konstruktivistischer Argumentation in hohem Maße plausibilisierten. David Bordwell's new book is at once a history of film criticism, an analysis of how critics interpret film, and a proposal for an alternative program for film studies. It is an anatomy of film criticism meant to reset the agenda for film scholarship. As such Making Meaning should be a landmark book, a focus for debate from which future film study will evolve. Bordwell systematically maps different strategies for interpreting films and making meaning, illustrating his points with a vast array of examples from Western film criticism. Following an introductory chapter that sets out the terms and scope of the argument, Bordwell goes on to show how critical institutions constrain and contain the very practices they promote, and how the interpretation of texts has become a central preoccupation of the humanities. He gives lucid accounts of the development of film criticism in France, Britain, and the United States since World War II; analyzes this development through two important types of criticism, thematic-explicatory and symptomatic; and shows that both types, usually seen as antithetical, in fact have much in common. These diverse and even warring schools of criticism share conventional, rhetorical, and problem-solving techniques--a point that has broad-ranging implications for the way critics practice their art. The book concludes with a survey of the alternatives to criticism based on interpretation and, finally, with the proposal that a historical poetics of cinema offers the most fruitful framework for film analysis.

Nothing affects the modern economy (and society) more than decisions made in the market place, especially, but not only, decisions made by consumers. Although it is not startling to suggest that decisions made in production are affected by choices consumers make, consumers have long been viewed, not only by academic economists, as individual, isolated rational actors that make or refrain from purchases purely on the basis of narrow financial considerations. Markets are not and never were morally neutral. Market relations have always had an often taken-for-granted moral underpinning. The moralization of the markets refers to the dissolution and replacement of the conventional moral underpinnings of market conduct, for example, in the music market, financial markets, and corporate governance. It further implies not only the heightened importance of new ethical precepts, but the significant change in the role of moral ideals in market behavior. These profound transformations of economic conduct are accompanied and co-determined by societal conflicts. The moralization of markets represents thus a new stage in the social evolution of markets. The book is divided into four parts, in which the twelve chapters, written by contributors from different social science disciplines, deal with the context of the moralization of the markets; the major social institutions; and present case studies that examine European and American attitudes and behavior towards tobacco and GMO; expansion of the private and ethics in business; and how workers respond to the new corporate norms. To understand contemporary times, we must appreciate the extent to which our lives are affected by the cultural and political struggle between "official" narratives and the counternarratives which emerge as oppositional responses. Counternarratives develops a concept of "postmodern counternarratives" as a frame for exploring the politics of media, technology and education within everyday struggles for human identities and loyalties. The authors identify two forms of counternarratives. One functions as a critique of the modernist propensity for grand narratives. The second concept, which is the focus of the book, builds on the first; the idea of "little stories" addressing cultural and political opposition to the "official" narratives used to manipulate public consciousness. This book explores commodification processes of personal data and provides a critical framing of the ongoing debate of privacy in the Internet age, using the example of social media and referring to interviews with users. It advocates and expands upon two main theses: First, people’s privacy is structurally invaded in contemporary informational capitalism. Second, the best response to this problem is not accomplished by invoking the privacy framework as it stands, because it is itself part of the problematic nexus that it struggles against. Informational capitalism poses weighty problems for making the Internet a truly social medium, and aspiring to sustainable privacy simultaneously means to struggle against alienation and exploitation. In the last instance, this means opposing the capitalist form of association – online and offline.
