I created this book to help those who want to journal, but don't know where to start. It can be difficult to let go of the thoughts and stresses of the day, and writing can be very calming and meditative. Writing down thoughts in response to a photo is an easy way to become engrossed and enter a quieter place while letting go of whatever it is that is bothering you. I chose these pictures as starting points for your writing. Their content is intended to be peaceful, and their placement is not intended to tell any particular story. Use them in whatever way appeals most to you; start at the beginning and write on every page, or each time simply open the book and write about the photo that catches your eye. There aren't too many lines to write on so don't feel you have to write an essay. If you only get words or phrases, just write them down. if you can't think of anything to write, simply describe the photo, and gradually more words will emerge. If you like to write a lot, use notebook paper then stick the page(s) into this book. To get started, just sit and look at your chosen photo for a while. Ask yourself whether it reminds you of something or someone? Maybe it makes you think of an adventure you had - or one you would like to have? What mood does it put you in? Write down whatever the photo brings to mind, but don't go back and edit as write, as that is guaranteed to stop you in your tracks! For now, just write the words down as they come to you! Every so often go back and read over what you have written, using the lined pages to take notes about any ideas, themes, or thoughts that keep coming up, or those you might want to explore further. Think about what are these recurring ideas might be trying to tell you. What you do with what you learn about yourself is entirely up to you, but you will often get intriguing insights and whispers about things you maybe want to change in your life!

"The connection which I have shown in this lecture to exist between the energy of the hearts contraction and the length of the muscle fibers, enables us to understand not only the marvelous power of adaptation of the heart to the varying strains of everyday life, but also the condition of this organ in disease, when from overstrain or morbid alterations in its muscles or valves it fails to carry out its functions with efficiency." What a beautiful sentence. It was delivered by the eminent physiologist Ernest H. Starling near the end of his Linacre Lecture given at Cambridge in 1915. When I was a young man editing manuscripts for technical journals, I was appalled by how poorly so many young scientists wrote. As the excerpt from Starling illustrates, scientific reporting was at one time rendered in well crafted prose. So, what happened? Style in scientific writing, as elsewhere, grew so transparent as to disappear altogether. My personal journey put me on a decades long path from technical to creative writing. Good writing is good writing, wherever it is found. My goal is to help you become a sculptor of words as you pursue the art of fiction. Some of what I have gleaned over the years, as heir to an older tradition, I offer to you in this extended essay.

The Art of Rest draws on ground-breaking research Claudia Hammond collaborated on: ‘The Rest Test’, the largest global survey into rest ever undertaken, completed by 18,000 people across 135 different countries. The survey revealed how people get rest and how it is directly linked to your sense of wellbeing.
