While African literature is presently enjoying much attention from the scholarly community, its heritage and identity are becoming less clearly defined. While Africa has a rich oral tradition, African writers find themselves writing in the languages of their colonial oppressors. So too, many of the best African writers now live outside Africa, particularly in North America. Much of the criticism of African literature is written by American professors, African writers sometimes teach their literature at American universities, and American publishers issue African literary works. At the same time, the political climate of many African countries has been detrimental to literacy and writing. This book explores many of the issues currently facing African literature. Each chapter is written by an expert contributor, to provide the volume with a broad coverage of numerous topics related to the present state of African literature. The opening chapters examine issues of language and postcoloniality in African literary works. Later chapters discuss such concerns as the formation of an African literary canon, representations of history and ideology in African writing, the role of women in African literature, and African ritual theater. Through its various chapters, the volume makes clear that African writers continue to engage pressing social and political issues, and that they are intellectuals rather than entertainers.

This collection of essays reflects on the life and work of Ngugi wa Thiong'o, who celebrated his 80th birthday in 2018. Drawing from a wide range of contributors, including writers, critics, publishers and activists, the volume traces the emergence of Ngugi as a novelist in the early 1960s, his contribution to the African culture of letters at its moment of inception, and his global artistic life in the twenty-first century. A horn is an instrument either for protection or destruction. The "horn" in the Horn of Africa has for so long turned inward, and on its people, thus victimizing those it was supposed to defend. The ensuing internecine bloodletting has thrown the region into an abyss out of which it is still struggling to emerge. Much of the story of this abyss is captured in social, political, economic, and literary treatises written by indigenous and international experts. Rarely, however, has there been a single volume that brings together keen analyses of the expressive arts of Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia, and Sudan. The Road Less Traveled is the first book of its kind. It brings together in the same volume essays on the literatures of the Horn of Africa written by renowned regional and international scholars. All the countries in the region, their major writers, and the genres through which the people in the Horn express themselves are given careful attention. The volume also includes essays that traverse borders, and/or transgress generic delineations/delimitations. The essays in the volume attest to a simple fact, namely, that through the arts humans weave a labyrinthine system of symbolic representations that bear witness to lives lived or imagined. And while in the Horn of Africa catastrophes may abound, the calamity that besets this region can equally be explained through its antiphony: the perseverance and cosmic, albeit cautious, optimism of its people. A horn, after all, is also a way of making music.
