Closely entwined with the educational revolution of early modernity, the Reformation transformed the pedagogical landscape and culture of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Embracing a broad understanding of the Reformation this volume examines the confessional dynamics which shaped the educational transformations of early modernity, including Calvinists, Lutherans, Anabaptists and Roman Catholics in its scope. Going beyond conventional emphases on the role of the printing press and theological education of clergy in university settings, it also explores the education of laity in academies, schools and the home in all manner of topics including theology, history, natural philosophy and ethics. More well-known figures like John Calvin and Philipp Melanchthon are examined alongside less-well known but important figures like Caspar Coolhaes and Lukas Osiander. Likewise, more prominent centres of reform including Switzerland, Germany and the Netherlands are considered together with often overlooked locations like the Czech Republic and Denmark.

2010 marks the 450th anniversary of the death of Philipp Melanchthon. Melanchthon was one of the first and foremost reformists. Unlike Luther, Zwingli and Calvin he lived through and was involved in the entire Reformation period, from the beginnings in 1517 with Luther's 95 theses to the end with the Peace of Augsburg in 1555. He also wrote the first textbook of Protestant theology, the most important of all Protestant confessions of faith, the Augsburg Confession, playing a major role in the subsequent development of Protestant schools and universities. He was an irenic, a believer in ecumenism and devoted to prayer. In this volume Martin H. Jung acquaints us with the heretofore wrongly relatively unfamiliar reformer. The author provides a fascinating and lively look at the life of Melanchthon, the events of his time and the role he played in them. This is more than just a biography: The entire history of the Protestant Reformation is laid out against the background of his life, with particular emphasis on the role Luther, Zwingli and Calvin played. Besides well-known themes such as humanism and the first textbook of Protestant theology penned by Melanchthon, the volume touches on less well-known and surprising new insights into Melanchthon's relationship with the Jews and Moslems. Further, new light is shed on Melanchthon's wife, Katharina Krapp. In addition, the author draws the line from the past to the present. 2010 is an anniversary year for Melanchthon, and 2017 marks the 500th anniversary of the Reformation itself. This volume is an excellent way to prepare for that event.

Sandra Bihlmaier constitutes a historical and philosophical analysis of Philipp Melanchthon's concept of method and philosophy. By means of a detailed inquiry into Melanchthon's textbooks of dialectic and rhetoric it uncovers the emergence and development of a notion of method which underlies an encyclopedic understanding of philosophy. The work reveals both the traditions of rhetoric and dialectic which Melanchthon builds on in his own works, as well as the Reformer's own original reinterpretation of these traditions. Moreover, the reinterpretation and transformation of essential concepts taken from traditional accounts is thematized against the background of the canon of arts and sciences, which undergoes a fundamental change during the European Renaissance. The understanding, configuration, and the applicability of this canon is deeply influenced by this original concept of method.Philipp Melanchthon's concept of method and philosophy is central to the understanding of 16th century definition of philosophy. Melanchthon's attempt to integrate into a former theoretical discipline, both the aspect of usefulness, as well as a degree of general applicability in human affairs, testifies to the fertility of his philosophical program. Also his project is highly relevant for an understanding of philosophy which transgresses contemporary idiosyncratic categories of philosophical knowledge and draws attention to two fundamental historiographical aspects. First, it cautions historians and philosophers against transferring current definitions of philosophy to works which emerge from different historical, social and intellectual traditions. Second, it raises the awareness of the reader regarding his own understanding of philosophy and of its underlying presuppositions.

Die Entstehung Des Negativen Melanchthonbildes written by Beate Kobler and has been published by Mohr Siebeck this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-05-21 with History categories.

English summary: Philipp Melanchthon, a theologian, humanist and reformer, was repeatedly evaluated negatively during the past centuries, and this resulted in numerous cliches. He was for example accused of corrupting and betraying Luther's doctrine, and in addition he was characterized as being timid and too compliant. Beate Kobler deals with the question of when and how this negative image originated during Melanchthon's lifetime, what events caused it to be reinforced and which critics influenced it in a particular manner. In doing so, she focuses on the Protestant criticism. This is particularly interesting, since it conflicts with Melanchthon's actual influence and his special impact. The result shows that the negative image of Melanchthon originated much earlier than had been assumed up to now.
