This book, on the pineal hormone melatonin, is addressed to a wide non-cognizant and cognizant readership. The hormone appears to be involved in sleep onset and other functions associated with the body’s clock, the suprachiasmic nucleus. It is ubiquitous throughout both the animal and plant kingdoms and has a long evolutionary history as a hormone. Melatonin has a major role in the regulation of circadian rhythms in non-mammalian vertebrates and forms part of their control in mammals. The present text emphasizes the positive role of exogenously administered melatonin, and its synthetic derivatives, on disrupted circadian rhythm-related dysfunctions. This is effected by resetting the clock in jet lag sufferers and those with seasonal affective disorders, insomnia, and various neurological conditions.

Patients and families coping with scoliosis and other spinal deformities are increasingly seeking better solutions for care and management. The recent worldwide expansion of the Schroth method, an exercise rehabilitation treatment originating in Germany, and its new advancements in compatible bracing have led to the need for an overview of evidence-based treatment principles. This comprehensive textbook is the first of its kind from the Schroth Best Practice Academy, an international group of highly esteemed and experienced scoliosis practitioners and researchers. A collaborative body of work, it focuses on the most common spinal deformities and provides current methods of non-surgical treatment. It highlights cutting-edge treatment options often disregarded by mainstream medicine, and will serve to guide and enhance the knowledge of conservative treatment practitioners desiring to help patients improve treatment outcomes and quality of life.

Neuroendocrine Correlates Of Sleep Wakefulness written by Daniel P. Cardinali and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-03-14 with Science categories.
As the title suggests, and unlike other existing books on sleep medicine, Neuroendocrine Correlates of Sleep/Wakefulness will be devoted primarily to endocrine regulation of the behavioral state control. It will address a wide spectrum of sleep./wakefulness phenomena (both animals and humans), including pathogenesis, diagnosis, and management. From molecular biology to applied clinical therapy, sleep research has been transformed in the last few years from a research backwater to an important interdisciplinary field. Anyone who regularly reads the literature on sleep, biological rhythms, or neuroendocrinology is aware that one of the subspecialties within sleep medicine, the neuroendocrine correlates of sleep/wakefulness, has in particular experienced a growth rate that is even faster than that of the field as a whole. To a significant extent this has been due to the introduction of new research technologies. The widespread adoption of a range of new methods in sleep research has opened a window into activities at the cellular and molecular level, which previously had been tightly closed. Consequently these activities are being characterized with a degree of precision and sensitivity that is without precedent. This volume invites the reader to explore the new vistas that have been opened onto the neuroendocrine frontier of sleep medicine. The editors have selectively identified a number of key articles having a citation frequency, which is considerably above the norm or which otherwise have contributed importantly to defining the neuroendocrine perspective. This new volume on Neuroendocrine Correlates of Sleep/Wakefulness is an up-to-date resource of research summaries and reviews written by major contributors to the fields of sleep, biological rhythms and neuroendocrinology. Its coverage is broad and its basic and clinical science reviews are detailed. In this volume,an international team of experts discuss their latest ideas, concepts, methods, and interpretations with supporting examples. This volume is intended for advanced students and specialists in psychobiology, neuroscience, neuroendocrinology, and psychiatry but might also be interest to anyone concerned with understanding the Neuroendocrine correlates of sleep/wakefulness. The contributions are directed more towards providing an integrated view of the field from the perspective of the authors, rather than being a compendium of recent results. The intent is to provide a reference book for recent and future workers in this and related areas of medicine and biology. Each topic in this volume has received the attention of a panel of authors who have responded to our request to review and place into perspective the major issues, which will undoubtedly confront newcomers to the field. The topics dealt with in Neuroendocrine correlates of Sleep/wakefulness are both diverse and complex. The editors hope that this volume will provide an authoritative summary of important issues in the neuroendocrine correlates of sleep/wakefulness. We also hope that it will motivate new researchers to join the quest for solutions to the problems that have been identified by our contributing authors.

Holistic Solutions For Anxiety Depression In Therapy Combining Natural Remedies With Conventional Care written by Peter Bongiorno and has been published by W. W. Norton & Company this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-03-16 with Psychology categories.
Complementary and alternative treatments for two of the most prevalent mental health complaints. Whether it’s the latest diet craze, acupuncture, fish oil, vitamin D, St. John’s wort, or some new “miracle mood cure,” many therapists don’t feel sufficiently well versed in the various complementary and alternative (CAM) remedies out there to give a sound opinion. Others may fear deleterious side-effects or interactions with psychiatric drugs their clients are already taking. Even more pervasive is the safety concern that their clients may inappropriately experiment with these treatments in lieu of more potent and, sometimes, necessary conventional care. This book addresses all these common concerns and more when it comes to treating anxiety and depression, providing an essential framework for understanding holistic care and helping to make sense of the alternative solutions available. Bongiorno, a naturopath who regularly works with mental health clients, walks readers through the fundamentals, laying out the basic principles of holistic care, the most salient CAM research to date as well as its safety concerns, and steps to take to determine if it’s appropriate to introduce a CAM modality to your client’s treatment. He also explains when holistic approaches may not be appropriate. Readers are then taught how to assess lifestyle and physiological factors that can contribute to a client’s anxiety and depression, such as sleep, diet, caffeine intake, exercise, sunlight exposure, media use, low blood sugar, cholesterol levels, thyroid issues, hormone issues, digestive health, and more. With an understanding of these underlying factors in place, the book goes on to outline the most effective vitamins, minerals, botanicals, and mind-body therapies for anxiety and depression—from amino acids to zinc, acupuncture to Qi gong, and everything in between—including dosages, best applications, and contraindications. How to work integratively when a client is already on an anxiolytic or antidepressant is also covered. A final chapter explains exactly how to make recommendations and design a successful treatment plan best suited to your client. With instructive graphics and loads of case vignettes, this resource is your go-to guide for understanding the complementary and alternative options for two of therapy’s most ubiquitous problems.
