Presently, Management has witnessed vast advancements, clearly becoming an area of trans and interdisciplinary knowledge. It has widened its scope from traditional business areas – such as marketing, strategy, management control, accounting and finance, taxation or operations – to other spaces, namely deepening bridges with behavioural sciences, engineering, health, or energy, fostering both quantitative models and methods. Management thinking at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Coimbra (FEUC) has followed these trends, enabling students with the essential skills supporting the practice of the profession, both in business and public sector organisations. This book features topical trends of research in Management studies, in which FEUC professors are involved, together with international peers, evidencing the openness of the Faculty to the world. Numerous of the subjects addressed relate to challenges that organisations are already facing or will have to deal with shortly. Therefore, the book not only presents innovative research questions, but it also delivers a practical perspective. Thus, organisations will certainly find here some support to better manage those issues in practice.

A free ebook version of this title is available through Luminos, University of California Press’s Open Access publishing program. Visit www.luminosoa.org to learn more. A Vietnamese Moses is the story of Philiphê Binh, a Vietnamese Catholic priest who in 1796 traveled from Tonkin to the Portuguese court in Lisbon to persuade its ruler to appoint a bishop for his community of ex-Jesuits. Based on Binh’s surviving writings from his thirty-seven-year exile in Portugal, this book examines how the intersections of global and local Roman Catholic geographies shaped the lives of Vietnamese Christians in the early modern era. The book also argues that Binh’s mission to Portugal and his intense lobbying on behalf of his community reflected the agency of Vietnamese Catholics, who vigorously engaged with church politics in defense of their distinctive Portuguese-Catholic heritage. George E. Dutton demonstrates the ways in which Catholic beliefs, histories, and genealogies transformed how Vietnamese thought about themselves and their place in the world. This sophisticated exploration of Vietnamese engagement with both the Catholic Church and Napoleonic Europe provides a unique perspective on the complex history of early Vietnamese Christianity.

"The Portuguese White Fleet, whose name derived from its vessels' white hulls, is an important part of Newfoundland and Labrador history. Gaspar Corte-Real's followers had been fishing off the Grand Banks for more than 400 years, but it was not until the 1900s that Portuguese fishermen began persecuting the North American cod fishery in force. When these ships made calls to St. John's, the sailors and fishermen became a prominent part of the city's way of life. However, the year 1955 marked the end of an era for the Portuguese White Fleet when Canada began to protest foreign overfishing and exploitation of its fishery. Following a bitter international dispute over territorial fishing grounds, the last ship of the White Fleet left St. John's on July 23, 1974. The White Fleet by J. P. Andrieux is a pictorial history of the centuries-long relationship between the Newfoundland and Portuguese fisheries."--P. [4] of cover.
