Now with the growth of commercialisation, football is a multi-billion pound business that competes for scarce resources and uses, amongst other things, professional management techniques. Because of the increase and push towards efficiency, it has become of greater interest to players, coaches, administrators, spectators and owners to identify psychological attributes and mental skills associated with superior sport performance as a primary stage of facilitating their development. However, there has been little research into the emotional factors affecting footballers at different levels, in particular, the mental toughness and hardiness of footballers. The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between mental toughness and hardiness of footballers and the level of football at which they perform. Mental toughness was assessed using the Psychological performance inventory. Hardiness was assessed using the Personal views survey III-R. Participants in the present study were 61 footballers from various clubs and 2 levels of performance: Playing recreational or elite football. Results are discussed relative to previous findings relevant to mental toughness and hardiness and future implications to aid the psychological development of footballers playing at different levels. Future research might concentrate further on psychological skills training, coping strategies and psychological preparation strategies in a wider variation of sports specific to a wider range of athletes, from grass roots to international level.

Groundbreaking Mental Toughness Training for Football will significantly change how hard you can push yourself mentally and emotionally through visualization techniques taught in this book. Want to be the best? To be the best you have to train physically and mentally to your maximum capacity. Visualizing is commonly thought of as an activity that cannot be quantified which makes it harder to see if you are improving or making a difference, but in reality visualizing will increase your chances of success much more than any other activity. You will learn three visualization techniques that are proven to improve your performance under any situation. These are: 1.Motivational Visualization Techniques. 2.Problem Solving Visualization Techniques 3.Goal Oriented Visualization Techniques. These football visualization techniques will help you: -Win more often. -Become mentally tougher. -Outlast the competition. -Get to the next level. -Recover faster and train longer. How is this possible? Visualizing will help you to better control your emotions, stress, anxiety, and performance under pressure situations that are often the difference between success and failure. Bringing out the best in yourself in any sport and reaching your true potential can only happen through a balanced training regimen which should include: mental training, physical training, and proper nutrition. Why aren't more people using visualizations to enhance their performance in football? There are a number of reasons but the truth is most people have never tried it before and are afraid to try something new. Others don't think that improving their mental capacity will make a difference but they are wrong. Practicing visualization techniques for football on a regular basis will allow you to: -Increase your lung capacity by helping you relax muscle tension and decrease workload. -Recover faster after training or competing through breathing techniques that will reduce muscle stress. -Overcome pressure situations. -Train harder and longer without getting as tired. -Reduce your chances of getting cramps and muscle tears. -Improve control over your emotions under stressful conditions. -See results you never thought possible.

Are you ready to take your soccer game to the next level? Improving your mental strength could be the answer. Things don’t always go our way. That is true in life, in our career, in our relationships and, of course, in sport. That sweet hit from the tee that lands perfectly on the fairway, and races on and on…and on, straight into the bunker. Or the day that our serve just will not function. Is there anything more frustrating than sending hit after hit into the net? Well, of course, there are many things harder to bear, but it doesn’t seem so at the time. Or the day we play the boss at squash, and aim to push him just so far before he defeats us with a series of devastating volleys and bias shots to the corner. Except, they just don’t come off, and we end up winning, knowing that the lift will continue to stop for us at the fifth floor, at least until next time. But these are all examples of individual sports; occasions where if things go against us it is only we that suffer, as annoying as that is. But in team games, such as soccer, we can end up letting down the entire team. Nobody wants to do that. Perhaps more significantly, we do not want the fear of that happening. Often it is the fear of doing something wrong, of making a mistake, of giving the referee a chance to award a penalty against us, that causes that particular disaster to occur. The mark of the very best players is that they have the mental toughness to overcome these moments of adversity. To accept that there are times when matters do not pan out as they hope, and having accepted them, move on without allowing their confidence to drop. Call it resilience, spirit, mental strength or whatever, without a doubt such a mindset is as crucial as having the skills to play at the level to which we aspire.

First published in 2011. The pursuit of excellence in sport depends on four key facets of performance, namely physical, technical, tactical and mental skills. However, when physical, technical and tactical skills are evenly matched, a common occurrence at elite level, it is the performer with greater levels of mental toughness that seems to prevail most often. This book brings together the world's leading researchers and practitioners working on mental toughness to discuss this vital ingredient of performance excellence in sport, to survey the latest research and to present cutting-edge developments in theory and professional practice. It explores key conceptual, methodological and practical issues including: what mental toughness is and is not, how to measure mental toughness in sport, how to develop mental toughness in sport, mental toughness in other human performance settings, from business to coping and life skills. Also highlighting important avenues for future research, Mental Toughness in Sport is essential reading for all advanced students, researchers and practitioners with an interest in sport psychology or performance sport.
