Dalam bahasa Indonesia kata etika ini kurang begitu populer dan jarang dipergunakan. Istilah etika lebih sering dipergunakan dalam kalangan terpelajar. Kata yang sepadan dengan etika serta yang biasa dipergunakan di dalam masyarakat adalah susila atau kesusilaan. Etika merupakan bagian dari akhlak, karena akhlak bukan hanya menyangkut perilaku manusia yang bersifat perbuatan lahiriah saja. Etika berbahasa merupakan subsistem dari kebudayaan. Hal ini terbukti dengan kemampuan seseorang dalam berbahasa diukur melalui pengetahuannya mengenai suatu budaya dalam suatu masyarakat tempat ia tinggal. Etika berbahasa erat kaitannya dengan keberadaan suatu kelompok masyarakat, oleh karena itu seharusnya etika berbahasa dimiliki oleh seseorang maupun kelompok masyarakat itu sendiri, karena melalui bahasa seseorang akan tahu status sosial dan budaya dalam masyarakat itu sehingga dapat memudahkan orang tersebut dalam memilih atau menggunakan bahasa secara tepat pada tempatnya. Jadi, dapat diartikan bahwa etika berbahasa adalah perilaku berbicara seseorang yang dijadikan tolak ukur atau cerminan pribadi seseorang melalui tutur kata sehingga kita dapat menilai pribadi seseorang. Tutur kata yang baik, lemah lembut, dan sopan santun yang dilakukan seseorang mencerminkan sebagai pribadi yang baik dan berbudi. Sebaliknya, apabila perkataan seseorang buruk, citraan buruklah yang akan melekat kepada pribadi orang tersebut. Sebagai alat komunikasi, bahasa mempunyai aturan aturan tertentu yang disesuaikan dengan situasi dan komunikan yang menggunakannya. Dalam menerapkan etika berbahasa hendaknya seseorang atau masyarakat diberi pengetahuan mengenai aturan-aturan sosial berbahasa, seperti: siapa yang berbicara, dengan bahasa apa, kepada siapa, tentang apa, kapan, di mana, dan dengan tujuan apa. Dengan mengetahui aturan-aturan tersebut seseorang atau masyarakat akan lebih mudah dalam memilih kata-kata dalam berkomunikasi.
