Commonsense Grammar And Style written by Phillip Sparks and has been published by Westview Publishing Co., Inc. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-04 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

CommonSense Grammar and Style was written with the business professional in mind. It will help you, the professional, write better letters and memorandums. It will help you avoid common errors, organize your messages, express yourself clearly, and find more information when you need it. It will teach you the basic survival skills. The emphasis in CommonSense Grammar and Style is always on simplicity. When several approaches to a common problem are possible, this book presents the least complicated and the most consistent. If you follow its advice, you will be on safe ground, but you must realize that other good writers may choose other correct solutions. CommonSense Grammar and Style relies on Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary (called "Merriam-Webster") for the spelling of words and abbreviations. Merriam-Webster is widely recognized as the American standard. In matters of usage, especially business usage, CommonSense Grammar and Style depends heavily on The Gregg Reference Manual (called "Gregg") by William A. Sabin. Careful readers will, however, notice occasional differences between the two. For example, Gregg ignores Merriam-Webster's simplification of abbreviations while this book welcomes it, and Gregg does not object to the use of data as a singular noun. This book does. This book, especially when purchased with the accompanying workbook, will allow you to develop the grammar and style skills necessary to excel in business communications.

Constructing Test Items written by Steven J. Osterlind and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-12-17 with Education categories.

Constructing test items for standardized tests of achievement, ability, and aptitude is a task of enormous importance. The interpretability of a test's scores flows directly from the quality of its items and exercises. Concomitant with score interpretability is the notion that including only carefully crafted items on a test is the primary method by which the skilled test developer reduces unwanted error variance, or errors of measurement, and thereby increases a test score's reliability. The aim of this entire book is to increase the test constructor's awareness of this source of measurement error, and then to describe methods for identifying and minimizing it during item construction and later review. Persons involved in assessment are keenly aware of the increased attention given to alternative formats for test items in recent years. Yet, in many writers' zeal to be `curriculum-relevant' or `authentic' or `realistic', the items are often developed seemingly without conscious thought to the interpretations that may be garnered from them. This book argues that the format for such alternative items and exercises also requires rigor in their construction and even offers some solutions, as one chapter is devoted to these alternative formats. This book addresses major issues in constructing test items by focusing on four ideas. First, it describes the characteristics and functions of test items. A second feature of this book is the presentation of editorial guidelines for writing test items in all of the commonly used item formats, including constructed-response formats and performance tests. A third aspect of this book is the presentation of methods for determining the quality of test items. Finally, this book presents a compendium of important issues about test items, including procedures for ordering items in a test, ethical and legal concerns over using copyrighted test items, item scoring schemes, computer-generated items and more.

English is a blend of passion and logic, except in spelling, which has nothing to do with either. Language is a set of conventions, some of them sensible, and some accidental. Usage is not so much a question of what is right or wrong as of what is or is not accepted. Accepted by whom? By the experts and the committees, and the advisers and the authorities, the stylists, and the grammarists, bless them, who write dictionaries, style guides, textbooks, handbooks, and grammar books in seventy-five volumes. They set limits; decide who has wiggle room and where. Academic writing operates in solitary confinement. Technical writing is medium-security; business writing a work-release effort. Next to them, creative writing is a resort. The only writing manual most writers will ever want -- or need!
