In meer dan honderd boeken die vanaf eind zestiende tot eind negentiende eeuw zijn verschenen, worden reizen door Overijssel beschreven. Sommige auteurs waren op doorreis, andere beschrijven uitgebreid steden en grote delen van de provincie. Uit deze verhalen blijkt dat er, met name in de negentiende eeuw, niet alleen belangstelling is voor steden met mooie monumenten of vervuilde buurten, maar ook voor de industriële ontwikkeling en het onderwijs. Naast de drie grote steden, Deventer, Zwolle en Kampen, worden de reisroutes beschreven. Overijssel bestond in het verleden namelijk voor een groot deel uit moerassige streken en grote heidegebieden. Slechts via een paar wegen kon men naar andere delen van de provincie reizen.

Over the last couple of decades there has been a strong academic interest in how individuals interact with each other while en route. Yet, even if various studies have informed us about present-day realities of travel companionships, we know little about the influence of gender both on these realities, as well as on the discourse in which these are being narrated. This book aims to establish an agenda for the study of companionship in travel writing by offering a collection of new essays which study texts that belong to the broad category of pre-modern and modern travel literature. Chapters explore the differences and similarities in the ways that women and men in the past chose to describe their experiences with, and/or their ideas about companionship, and specifically reveals the influence of gender norms, conventions, restrictions, and stereotypes. This is the first book which looks at the long-term, interdisciplinary, and genuinely international history of gendered discourses on companionship in travel writing. It will be of interest to scholars and students from a wide variety of disciplines, including cultural and social history, as well as cultural, literary, gender, travel, and tourism studies.

Veel eerder, rond 1338, verscheen het handschrift De Diepenheimse kroniek geschreven door dorpspastoor Albert. De demografie komt aan bod in een bijdrage over trouwen in Twente. Voor de bestrijding van de armoede stichtte de Maatschappij van Weldadigheid begin negentiende eeuw de vrije kolonie Willemsoord en de strafkolonie Ommerschans. Bouwkunst wordt aangehaald in de oprichting van de katholieke kerk van Kuinre en schilderkunst in een portret van de Heer van Almelo. De heerlijkheid De Eese in Noord-Overijssel is een bijzonder geheel. Sinds 2006 is het aangemerkt als Complex Cultuurhistorische Buitenplaats. In de Eerste Wereldoorlog kwamen Belgische vluchtelingen naar diverse gemeenten in Twente. Niet alle burgemeesters en de Commissaris der Koningin ontvingen deze mensen met open armen.

DAbei lassen sie in deutlicher Form das soziale Leben der Zeit nachvollziehen.

This book, illustrated with over 130 photographs, is an inspiring literary account of a journey both spiritual and adventurous. As a travelogue it guides the reader along a rediscovered pilgrim trail, once the most important in Asia. It predates by many centuries the well-known European pilgrim route to Santiago de Compostela. The path as taken by the Buddha himself was followed by millions of pilgrims over succeeding centuries. The path links the earliest Buddhist pilgrimage sites: - Lumbini, where Siddhartha Gautama was born - Bodhgaya, where Siddhartha attained enlightenment and became a Buddha or 'awakened one' - Sarnath, where the Buddha shared his insights - Kushinagara, where the Buddha passed away Buddhism largely disappeared from India after 1200 ce and the pilgrim trail gradually fell into obscurity. Maarten Olthof has drawn on Chinese monastic manuscripts to reconstruct the 600-mile route through India and Nepal, which he completed in 2003 on foot as a pilgrim. That journey, beginning as a one-man project, gradually developed into a spiritual adventure involving dozens of people and culminating in a demonstration for peace in Nepal, a country at the time torn apart by civil war. The pilgrimage helps the author face key moments in his life and offers him the healing power to achieve thorough acceptance of the past as it was and of the future as it will be. By literally following in Buddha's footsteps, he discovers that our life does not differ essentially from Siddhartha's. He comes to realize that the four pilgrimage sites are symbolic of crucial stages in life that each one of us goes through. As a biologist, he notes striking parallels between Buddhism and contemporary ecological thinking.
