Dans l'époque contemporaine, vis-à-vis de la philosophie classique, deux attitudes se dessinent : La première s'oriente vers la liquidation de la philosophie : on oppose la science à la spéculation, le langage précis au langage incertain, la logique à toute autre méthode ou démarche, le fait au concept, etc. c'est la tendance dite positiviste, scientiste, empiriste (logique) ou encore pragmatique (recours ou retour à la pratique sans théorie...) Une autre tendance veut au contraire maintenir la philosophie, restituer dans sa dignité la figure du philosophe (savant et sage). Elle veut obtenir ce résultat par la pédagogie voire par l'institutionnalisation de la philosophie. Ce qui amène une promotion de l'histoire philosophique et de la philosophie de l'histoire... Ou bien encore entraîne le choix plus ou moins motivé d'un " système " parmi d'autres... Or, avec Marx et de Marx naît une orientation qui échappe à l'alternative : " ou bien conserver ou bien abolir la philosophie... ". selon Marx il faut se donner pour tache la réalisation effective de la philosophie. Non pour l'entretenir comme interprétation du monde ou pour la supprimer comme fallacieuse - mais en agissant de sorte que la nature et la société se transforment : qu'elles deviennent, selon les idéalités de la philosophie, vraies, bonnes, belles... Un siècle après Marx, qu'est-il advenu ? Beaucoup d'événements - une histoire dans laquelle la pensée de Marx intervient avec force, mais qui ne se conforme pas à cette pensée. Notamment : la philosophie continue. Le moment de sa réalisation a été marqué, déclare énigmatiquement Adorno, au début de sa Dialectique négative. Remarque dont il faut tenir compte : mais comment ? Peut-être en transformant la philosophie elle-même. Elle ne peut continuer comme auparavant. Tenir compte des diverses sciences ? C'est nécessaire mais non suffisant. Que la philosophie et les philosophes se préoccupent de thèmes, de problèmes qui échappent à la philosophie saut peut-être aux premiers Grecs : la cité, la ville, l'urbain - le quotidien - la guerre, la violence, les enjeux des parties qui se jouent - le (la) politique et le mondial, etc. c'est l'entrée en scène de la métaphilosophie !
