›Mehrsprachigkeit‹ ist zu einem zentralen Schlagwort auch außerhalb des akademischen Diskurses avanciert, vor allem auf der Ebene supranationaler EU-Politik. So trat etwa 2007 erstmals ein EU-Kommissar mit eigenem Portfolio für Mehrsprachigkeit sein Amt an. Aber kommen die sprachenpolitischen Kommunikationsbemühungen der EU bei ihren Adressaten, den nationalen Mitgliedsstaaten auch wirklich an?In einer kritisch-diskursanalytischen Fallstudie wird untersucht, wie und in welchem Ausmaß die diskursiv betriebene Mehrsprachigkeitspolitik der EU in Österreich rezipiert wird. Darüber hinaus wird der Frage nachgegangen, wie Sprache im Sinn von ›Sprachigkeit‹ in der Politik, den Medien und der Bevölkerung Österreichs diskursiv konstruiert wird. This book constitutes a significant contribution to political discourse analysis and to the study of silence, both from the point of view of discourse analysis as well as pragmatics, and it is also relevant for those interested in politics and media studies. It promotes the empirical study of silence by analysing metadiscourse about politicians’ silence and by systematically conceptualising the communicativeness of silence in the interplay between intention (to be silent), expectation (of speech) and relevance (of the unsaid). Three cases of sustained metadiscourse about silent politicians from Germany are analysed to exemplify this approach, based on media texts and protocols of parliamentary inquiries. Ideals of political transparency and communicative openness are identified as a basis for (disappointed) expectations of speech which trigger and determine metadiscourse about politicians’ silences. Finally, the book deals critically with the role of those who act as advocates of ‘the public’s’ demand to speak out.

This book represents the first in-depth, comparative investigation of linguistic purism in modern French. It investigates the relative prevalence of purist ideology in France and Quebec. Both experience influence from English and have similar language legislation, but they differ in their social, political and economic history. Three different levels of society are examined (official, group and individual), allowing a comparison of the ‘voice from above’ and the ‘voice from below’. This is a key element in recent discussions of language planning but is rarely provided in studies of French. The study is also the first to apply to empirical data Thomas’s widely cited theoretical framework for describing linguistic purism (1991), and has evaluated and refined this, enhancing the theoretical underpinnings of the field. The book will be of interest not only to French scholars and sociolinguists, but also to scholars of language planning, language policy and language ideologies in all languages.
