This volume presents for the first time in English a curated selection of writings by the design thinker Gui Bonsiepe from the 1960s to the present day. Addressing as it does questions of non-Western design and a design practice that is both radical and democratic, Bonsiepe's work has assumed new importance for current debates inspired by global political and environmental crises. Structured into three sections, the anthology first addresses Bonsiepe's work on design theory and practice, particularly in relation to the history and contemporary relevance of the Ulm design school, where Bonsiepe was a professor in the 1960s. A second section then represents Bonsiepe's writings after his move to South America in the 1960s and '70s, where he worked as a design consultant for the Allende government in Chile before the military takeover. In writings from the period, Bonsiepe explores the concept of design 'at the periphery' and the relationship of national design traditions and practices in Latin American countries to those of 'the core' - Western European and American design. The final section comprises selections of Bonsiepe's writings on design in relation to literacy and language, visuality and cognition. This indispensable volume includes new interviews with Bonsiepe as well as his original, previously unpublished texts.

La existencia de una disciplina como el Diseño en una región como América Latina se puede explicar por diferentes causas. Es posible verla florecer silenciosamente en el diálogo que intentan latinoamericanos con las preocupaciones de la proaucción artística, sus relaciones con el comunismo y; los vínculos con la producción mecánica desde los años 1940. De igual manera se asoma en los diferentes emprendimientos que van promoviendo su temprana formalización desde los años 1950 -unas veces con más conciencia que otras-. A esto se le suman las modernas formas de vida de los procesos de urbanización latinoamericana, que van demandando nuevas destrezas técnicas y; estéticas en los otrora artesanos. En esto, el afán nacionalista por el anhelado 'desarrollo' es el telón de fondo en donde los procesos se fusionan intensamente. Y se aglutinan mientras crean las condiciones para que generaciones de jóvenes soñadores con el cambio social y; sensibilizados con la crítica cultural que rondaba por la región, las digieran desde los años 1960. El florecimiento configura así la idea de que el Diseño era lo que se necesitaba para conquistar las promesas de la modernidad en esta tierra agobiada y asediada, con lo que produce una epistemología latinoamericana del Diseño, que como resultado se configura como un discurso de resistencia.

We are on an industrial Titanic, fueled by rapidly depleting stocks of fossil hydrocarbons. Making the deck chairs from recyclable materials and feeding the boilers with biofuels is futile. In the end, the ship is doomed by the laws of thermodynamics and by the implacable biological and geological limits that are already beginning to pinch. Ophuls warns us that we are headed for a postindustrial future that, however technologically sophisticated, will resemble the preindustrial past in many important respects. With Plato's Revenge, Ophuls, author of Ecology and the Politics of Scarcity, envisions political and social transformations that will lead to a new natural-law politics based on the realities of ecology, physics, and psychology. A handsomely produced survey on Brazilian design polymath José Zanine Caldas One of the most important figures in Brazilian material culture, José Zanine Caldas (1919-2001) left behind a diverse legacy in architecture, design and art. His oeuvre includes maquettes built for architecture, industrial and handcrafted furniture, sculpture, landscaping and floriculture, low-income and elite housing designs, and research on the use and reuse of Brazilian woods. Much of Caldas' aesthetic was based on his dialogue with vernacular craft and its construction practices, which stemmed in part from his lack of a traditional education. This book introduces his work and celebrates the centenary of his birth, tracing his trajectory with a primary focus on the rationale of his design and his worldview.
