Chemical fertilizers have been widely utilized in agriculture since the mid-20th century to enhance crop productivity. However, the prolonged use of chemical fertilizers has resulted in soil degradation, water pollution, and environmental harm. Soil organic carbon is a key indicator of soil fertility, which not only affected soil nutrients and fertility but also had huge potential to capture carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere. Microorganisms play a crucial role in soil carbon and nutrient cycling and subsequently influence crop productivity, carbon sequestration, and soil fertility. Therefore, it is imperative to develop sustainable and green agricultural systems, which could synergistically boost crop productivity, reduce nutrient losses, promote carbon sequestration, improve soil health, and adapt to climate change. In recent years, there have been many studies on sustainable agriculture. However, strengthening the understanding of microorganisms in promoting carbon sequestration and crop productivity is still one of the most effective means of guiding future management in sustainable and green agriculture. In this research topic, we aim to shed light on the mechanisms that how microorganisms in rhizosphere and/or bulk soil impact nutrient uptake in plants under diverse conditions as well as their consequences for soil carbon sequestration and soil health. These findings would significantly contribute to our understanding of the complex network of genetic, biochemical, physical, and metabolic interactions among plants, microbial communities, and the environment. We welcome novel research articles, reviews, and perspectives that cover topics including molecular biology, soil microbial ecology, carbon sequestration and biogeochemical cycling, and crop productivity promotion in agriculture. Case studies and meta-analyses that provide practical implications for sustainable land management practices are also welcome.

The cropping system is one of the important components of sustainable agriculture, since it provides more efficient nutrient cycling. As such, balanced fertilization must be based on the concept of sustainable crop production. Feeding the rapidly growing world population using environmentally sustainable production systems is a major challenge, especially in developing countries. A number of studies have highlighted the fact that degradation of the world's cultivated soils is largely responsible for low and plateauing yields. Climate change remains a global challenge due to the livelihood threat it poses particularly to the marginalized or vulnerable groups in society. Though developing countries contribute the least to the cause of climate change, they remain the most vulnerable to its effects. This vulnerability is due to the over-reliance of the population on rain-fed agriculture as the main livelihood source. These, mainly smallholder farmers, lack institutional, technological, infrastructural, and economic capabilities to adapt to climate change. In addition to this, there are wide disparities in the allocation of key sustainable livelihood assets (e.g., land, livestock, farm equipment, etc.) among men, women, and youth. For instance, women often have limited access to land, financial services, social capital, technology, labour, education, and other opportunities mainly due to traditional/cultural sex divisions within the domestic realm. Moreover, the majority of the resource-poor youth are employed in the agricultural sector, rendering them more vulnerable to climate uncertainties. The impact of climate change on these groups (men, women, youth, and smallholders) is expected to be different. Studies that fail to acknowledge these differences and focus only on geographical location could be misleading. Recent climate change scenarios indicate substantial reductions in the yield of staple foods linked to drought, high temperature, and rainfall variability with a projected overall decline in revenue from agriculture. These projected negative impacts would directly influence food security and render millions of households undernourished. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, between 720 and 828 million people across the globe are already experiencing chronic hunger. Additionally, about 161 million children below five years of age are stunted.

Sustainable management of soils is an important global issue of the 21st century. Feeding roughly 8 billion people with an environmentally sustainable production system is a major challenge, especially considering the fact that 10% of the world’s population at risk of hunger and 25% at risk of malnutrition. Accordingly, the 68th United Nations (UN) general assembly declared 2016 the “International Year of Pulses” to raise awareness and to celebrate the role of pulses in human nutrition and welfare. Likewise, the assembly declared the year 2015 as the “International Year of Soils” to promote awareness of the role of “healthy soils for a healthy life” and the International Union of Soil Science (IUSS) has declared 2015-2024 as the International Decade of Soils. Including legumes in cropping systems is an important toward advancing soil sustainability, food and nutritional security without compromising soil quality or its production potential. Several textbooks and edited volumes are currently available on general soil fertility or on legumes but‚ to date‚ none have been dedicated to the study of “Legumes for Soil Health and Sustainable Management”. This is important aspect, as the soil, the epidermis of the Earth (geoderma)‚ is the major component of the terrestrial biosphere.
