Radiation can produce dramatic improvements or degradation in the properties of materials, so an understanding of the microstructural changes that occur during irradiation is critical for the development of predictive models. This book, first published in 2001, brings together researchers working on different materials systems so that similarities and differences in radiation effects can be compared. More specifically, it focuses on the microstructural changes which occur in solids during irradiation with ions, electrons, neutrons, gamma rays and X-rays. Materials of interest include metals, intermetallics, semiconductors, insulators and superconductors. Papers from a joint session on 'Multiscale Modelling of Materials' as well as experimental and theoretical studies are also included. Topics include: semiconductors; fundamentals of radiation effects in electronic materials, ceramics and polymers; ceramics and nuclear waste materials; austenitic and reactor pressure vessel steels; fundamental aspects of defect production and microstructure evolution in metals; and modelling radiation effects in metals.

This book reveals progress on a broad range of fronts in radiation damage. Fundamental understanding of microstructural evolution during irradiation is being significantly advanced by improving methods for microstructural characterization coupled with atomistic and multiscale modeling of the defect production and evolution processes. Characterization of microstructures by techniques such as 3D atom probe, high-resolution electron microscopy and positron annihilation are unveiling the nature of numerous types of defects on size scales in the nanometer range. This understanding of microstructural evolution is shedding light on technological problems associated with degradation in nuclear power systems as well as showing opportunities to use radiation to produce useful structures at the nanoscale for a host of applications. It brings together researchers to promote the cross-fertilization of ideas and techniques. Both experimental and theoretical studies, including atomistic and mesoscale modeling, are presented. Topics include: irradiated metals; austenitic stainless steels; radiation effects; irradiated ceramics; ferritic and pressure vessel steels; ion beam synthesis of nanostructures and thin layers; ion-solid interactions for optoelectronics/ photonics and semiconductors and electronic materials.

Treatise on Materials Science and Technology, Volume 7: Microstructures of Irradiated Materials covers the effects of irradiation on the microstructures of solids. The book introduces basic concepts and terminology and discusses the physical effects of irradiation, those having to do with the physical displacement of atoms and the subsequent atom rearrangements that can occur either by momentum transfer or by diffusional phenomena. The text also describes the chemical effects of irradiation, including diffusion, phase changes, precipitation of solute atoms, transmutations, and combinations of these. Some of the complex situations encountered in some nuclear fuels and structural materials of practical concern are also encompassed. Metallurgists, metallurgical engineers, ceramists, materials scientists, and people interested in the nuclear field will find the book invaluable.

The focus of the symposium, which was held at the 1994 MRS Fall Meeting, was on the changes produced in the microstructure of metals, ceramics, and semiconductors by irradiation with energetic particles. This proceedings volume contains invited and contributed papers. Among the topics are computer simulation of displacement cascade damage in metals; radiation effects in ceramic insulators; and computer simulation of thermal annealing effects of self implanted silicon. Annotation Effects of Radiation on Materials: Fourteenth International Symposium was presented at Andover, MA, June 1988. The symposium was sponsored by ASTM Committee E-10 on Nuclear Technology and Applications. The papers from the first three days of the symposium appear in the two volumes of this publication. Volume I encompasses radiation damage- induced microstructures; point defect, solute, and gas atom effects; atomic-level measurement techniques; and applications of theory. Volume II includes mechanical behavior, all papers dealing with pressure-vessel steels, breeder reactor components, dosimetry, and nuclear fuels. The fourth day of the symposium was devoted to the single topic of reduced-activation materials (see TK9204). The two volumes are separately sold at $127 and $128 respectively; each is independently indexed. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR.
