An introduction to the concept of “migration stigma,” along with new analytical frameworks to deepen understanding of the experiences of immigrants, their descendants, and native-born residents in immigrant-receiving societies. Due to economic crises, sociopolitical instability, and climate change, international migration is likely to persist if not increase in the future. Meanwhile, struggles to secure widespread acceptance of immigrant populations are evident worldwide. This volume, edited by Lawrence Yang, Maureen Eger, and Bruce Link, introduces the concept of “migration stigma” and proposes new ways to understand the complex challenges facing immigrants, their descendants, and contemporary societies. This dissertation provides a comprehensive understanding of substance use recovery and recovery capital among the diverse group of persons with a migration background and ethnic minorities (MEM). The doctoral study offers a nuanced and detailed examination of the lived experiences of MEM with substance use problems from a combined local (Flanders, Belgium) and international perspective. By exploring recovery and recovery capital among MEM in an increasingly participatory manner, the dissertation uncovers which personal, social and community resources may be mobilised to support recovery. It unveils how important barriers to recovery, such as multiple intersecting forms of stigma, may be overcome. Finally, a co-creative case study offers a specific deepening of how the continuum of care for substance use problems may be tailored to persons with an Islamic migration background. This dissertation aims to inspire researchers, policymakers, and (future) practitioners to look beyond existing reference, policy, and practice frameworks and to open up possibilities for more inclusive recovery-supportive environments.

Central to this volume, and critical to its unique creative significance and contribution, is the conceptual unification of syndemics and stigma. Syndemics theory is increasingly recognized in social science and medicine as a crucial framework for examining and addressing pathways of interaction between biological and social aspects of chronic and acute suffering in populations. While much research to date addresses known syndemics such as those involving HIV, diabetes, and mental illness, this book explores new directions just beginning to emerge in syndemics research – revealing what syndemics theory can illuminate about, for example the health consequences of socially pathologized pregnancy or infertility, when stigmatization of reproductive options or experiences affect women’s health. In other chapters, newly identified syndemics affecting incarcerated or detained individuals are highlighted, demonstrating the physical, psychological, structural, and political-economic effects of stigmatizing legal frameworks on human health, through a syndemic lens. Elsewhere in the volume, scholars examine the stigma of poverty and how it affects both nutritional and oral health. The common thread across all chapters is linkages of social stigmatization, structural conditions, and how these societal forces drive biological and disease interactions affecting human health, in areas not previously explored through these lenses.

This book provides an overview of recent trends in the management of trauma and post-traumatic stress disorders that may ensue from distressing experiences associated with the process of migration. Although the symptoms induced by trauma are common to all cultures, their specific meaning and the strategies used to deal with them may be culture-specific. Consequently, cultural factors can play an important role in the diagnosis and treatment of individuals with psychological reactions to extreme stress. This role is examined in detail, with an emphasis on the need for therapists to bear in mind that different cultures often have different concepts of health and disease and that cross-cultural communication is therefore essential in ensuring effective care of the immigrant patient. In 1917, the president of the American Psychological Association at that time, Raymond Dodge, wrote “I have no expectation that the laws of mental fatigue will be formulated in the immediate future”. Remarkably, despite continuous efforts over a period of more than 100 years, a mature theory of the origins and neural mechanisms of mental fatigue has yet to be achieved. Physical fatigue is defined as “the transient inability of muscles to maintain optimal physical performance, and is made more severe by intense physical exercise”. Mental fatigue could be phrased as “a transient decrease in maximal cognitive performance resulting from prolonged periods of cognitive activity”. Currently, the mechanism underlying mental fatigue is still yet to be discovered. Chronic fatigue is one of the symptoms that may occur in numerous chronic disorders, such as hypertension, multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia, and heart fail. Currently, there is no cure for ME/CFS. Chronic fatigue seems to be a relatively common, yet undertreated symptom. Presumably, increasing knowledge of physiological mechanisms underlying fatigue might potentially lead to an improvement in the efficacy of therapy for various disorders. Therefore, the goal of the current Research Topic is to collect papers on both physiology of fatigue as well as mechanism underlying pathologies, as ME/CFS. Also, papers on clinical trials involving subjects with chronic fatigue, or patients with ME/CFS are welcomed.
