INTRODUCTION TO POSITIVE PSYCHOLOGY 1.1 Definition of Positive Psychology Positive psychology is a recent branch of psychology whose purpose was summed up in 1998 by Martin Seligman and Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. Positive psychologists seek "to find and nurture genius and talent", and "to make normal life more fulfilling", not simply to treat mental illness (Seligman & Csikszentmihalyi, 2000). The field is intended to complement, not to replace traditional psychology. It does not seek to deny the importance of studying how things go wrong, but rather to emphasize the importance of using the scientific method to determine how things go right. Researchers in the field analyze things like states of pleasure or flow, values, virtues, talents, as well the ways that they can be promoted by social systems and institutions (William, 2005). Psychological well-being (WB) as put-forth by (Diener, Lucas, & Oishi, 2002) is termed as not only the absence of a mental disorder but also the presence of positive psychological resources. Ryan and Deci (2001) have stated that the positive psychological resources includes components of hedonic or subjective well-being like positive effect, life satisfaction, happiness and components of eudaemonic well-being meaning self-acceptance, positive relations, autonomy, purpose in life etc. Positive psychology is defined as the study of the contributing conditions and processes for the optimal functional and flourishing of people in particular along with groups or institutions as put forth by Gable and Haidt (2005).
