This volume focuses on how, why, under what conditions, and with what effects people move across space in relation to mining, asking how a focus on spatial mobility can aid scholars and policymakers in understanding the complex relation between mining and social change. This book examines how extractivism transforms territories and affects the well-being of rural people, drawing on in-depth fieldwork conducted on tree plantations in Chile. The book argues that pine and eucalyptus monoculture plantations in southern Chile are a form of extractivism representing a mode of nature appropriation that captures large amounts of natural resources to produce wooden-based raw materials with little processing and an export-oriented focus. The book discusses the nexus of extractivism, territorial transformations, well-being, and emerging resistances using a participatory action research methodological approach in the Region of Los Ríos, southern Chile. The findings show how the configuration of an extractivist logging enclave generated a substantial and irrevocable reordering of human-nature relations, resulting in the territorial and ontological occupation of rural places that disrupted the fundamental human needs of peasants and indigenous people. The book maintains that Chile's green growth development approach does not challenge the consolidated tree plantation enclave controlled by large multinationals. Instead, green growth legitimises the extractivist logic. The book draws parallels with other countries and regions to contribute to wider debates surrounding these topics. This book explores lithium extraction in Chile as part of the global energy transition, unravelling the ontological, ecological, and economic dimensions behind this type of extractivism. A transition away from fossil fuels is urgent in the context of climate change and one of the main challenges so far has been to store the variable energy provided by renewable energy sources. Due to its role in the lithium-ion batteries that power electric vehicles, lithium has been framed as a ‘critical mineral’ to transit towards low-carbon economies. Chile is the second lithium-exporting country worldwide and while it aims to expand its production, the delicate wetland ecosystems, and Indigenous territories where lithium comes from face increasing pressure. This book looks at the worlds, ecologies, and economies that are becoming increasingly extracted and the effects of these processes. Drawing on the case of extractivism in the Salar de Atacama watershed in the Antofagasta region in Chile and engaging with Indigenous and non-Indigenous local communities, NGOs, state officials, companies, and lithium workers through a twelve-month ethnography, the book offers a unique perspective into the contested narratives around what is being extracted and the manifold effects of it. By putting the Indigenous cosmovision forward and showing the local experiences with an industry powered by the ongoing energy transition, this book connects the notions of interconnection and fragmentation to provide a wider understanding of future challenges, where ontologies, ecologies, and economies are intertwined. In 2018, a few months before the first referendum for full sovereignty, the government of New Caledonia launched the co-design of the country's first water policy based on a broad consultation that involved 1 out of 600 New Caledonians, the locally so-called “Shared Water Policy”.
