Questo libro interpreta l’Odissea come una grande opera d’arte che, attraverso un lungo processo compositivo, ha raggiunto nella forma finale una spiccata originalità rispetto all’Iliade. Ciascun canto è studiato in tre momenti: lettura, analisi, critica. Il testo è tradotto quasi integralmente in forma chiara e moderna, e commentato sulla base di una ricognizione a vasto raggio della filologia omerica degli ultimi due secoli. Con Odisseo entra nella poesia dell’Occidente la figura di «un uomo nuovo», originale e paradigmatica nello stesso tempo; entra anche per la prima volta la vita affettiva degli esclusi, soprattutto della donna, ispiratrice dell’azione e della nostalgia.
