Studies of the evolution of animal signals and sensory behaviour have more recently shifted from considering 'extrinsic' (environmental) determinants to 'intrinsic' (physiological) ones. The drive behind this change has been the increasing availability of neural network models. With contributions from experts in the field, this book provides a complete survey of artificial neural networks. The book opens with two broad, introductory level reviews on the themes of the book: neural networks as tools to explore the nature of perceptual mechanisms, and neural networks as models of perception in ecology and evolutionary biology. Later chapters expand on these themes and address important methodological issues when applying artificial neural networks to study perception. The final chapter provides perspective by introducing a neural processing system in a real animal. The book provides the foundations for implementing artificial neural networks, for those new to the field, along with identifying potential research areas for specialists.

Artificial neural networks may probably be the single most successful technology in the last two decades which has been widely used in a large variety of applications. The purpose of this book is to provide recent advances of artificial neural networks in industrial and control engineering applications. The book begins with a review of applications of artificial neural networks in textile industries. Particular applications in textile industries follow. Parts continue with applications in materials science and industry such as material identification, and estimation of material property and state, food industry such as meat, electric and power industry such as batteries and power systems, mechanical engineering such as engines and machines, and control and robotic engineering such as system control and identification, fault diagnosis systems, and robot manipulation. Thus, this book will be a fundamental source of recent advances and applications of artificial neural networks in industrial and control engineering areas. The target audience includes professors and students in engineering schools, and researchers and engineers in industries.

Modern neural networks gave rise to major breakthroughs in several research areas. In neuroscience, we are witnessing a reappraisal of neural network theory and its relevance for understanding information processing in biological systems. The research presented in this book provides various perspectives on the use of artificial neural networks as models of neural information processing. We consider the biological plausibility of neural networks, performance improvements, spiking neural networks and the use of neural networks for understanding brain function.

Speech Hearing And Neural Network Models written by Seiichi Nakagawa and has been published by IOS Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1995 with Medical categories.

A wide range of fields of study support speech research. They cover many fields like for instance phonetics, linguistics, psychology, cognitive science, sonics, information engineering (information theory, pattern recognition, artificial intelligence), and it is an extremely difficult job to carry all of these in one body. The first half of this book gives detailed descriptions of engineering applications, that is the speech, hearing and perception mechanisms that form the basis for automatic synthesis and recognition of speech. The second half of this book gives a detailed explanation of speech synthesis and recognition based on a collective physiological approach, that is the artificial neural networks which imitate human neural networks and have once again been bathed in attention lately. The characteristics of this book are that, along with having engineers and technicians as its main targets, it explains engineering models based on speech science.

Stochasticity Nonlinearity And Forecasting Of Streamflow Processes written by Wen Wang and has been published by IOS Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006 with Computers categories.

Streamflow forecasting is of great importance to water resources management and flood defense. On the other hand, a better understanding of the streamflow process is fundamental for improving the skill of streamflow forecasting. The methods for forecasting streamflows may fall into two general classes: process-driven methods and data-driven methods. Equivalently, methods for understanding streamflow processes may also be broken into two categories: physically-based methods and mathematically-based methods. This thesis focuses on using mathematically-based methods to analyze stochasticity and nonlinearity of streamflow processes based on univariate historic streamflow records, and presents data-driven models that are also mainly based on univariate streamflow time series. Six streamflow processes of five rivers in different geological regions are investigated for stochasticity and nonlinearity at several characteristic timescales.
