This book explores the ways in which the American writers Gertrude Stein, Ernest Hemingway, and Zora Neale Hurston used modernist primitivism to assert a uniquely American literary identity in the face of European cultural hegemony. The extended Introduction traces the history of primitivism from a classical rhetorical trope to its emergence in the twentieth century as aesthetic, exemplified by Picasso and his use of African masks, that combined new work in the human sciences especially anthropology and psychology, with new ideas in the visual arts to challenge traditional ideas of realism and artistic accomplishment. The first two chapters bring together visual evidence, published and unpublished writings, and linguistic theory to give the first detailed account of the theoretical and gender concerns of the Stein-Picasso collaboration, which culminated in Picasso's Les demoiselles d'Avignon and Stein's Melanctha. In the final two chapters, the author shows how both Hemingway and Hurston participated in the racialist scientific debates of the 1920s and used primitivism to find their respective artistic voices: Hemingway in his use of American Indians in recasting his life narratives in the Nick Adams stories, and Hurston in her attempts to use her anthropological training to construct a mythic African-American past.

The answers for perfect teeth, unblemished skin, and pristine hair are in this book. Dr. Price was 75 years ahead of his time. In this book, he demonstrates that isolated groups of people living in accordance with Nature have the best overall physical and mental health. Diseases inflicting “modern” humans are unheard of in most of these study groups. Dr. Weston Andrew Price, DDS, was called the “Isaac Newton of Nutrition” and the “Darwin of Nutrition.” This edition of Dr. Price’s classic is modernized with the epub format. It is easier to read on smartphones and tablets. It also includes updated statistics and additional images. Dr. Price shows that illness, disease, behavior, criminality, anemia, voice, and even cheek-line, are all within the domain of Nutrition. “If civilized man is to survive, he must incorporate the fundamentals of primitive nutritional wisdom into his modern lifestyle.” —Dr. Weston A. Price, DDS

Primitive written by Marco Greenberg and has been published by Hachette UK this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-04-14 with Business & Economics categories.

A Wall Street Journal Business Book Bestseller "Primitive provides a path forward to unleash your inner entrepreneur."―Barbara Corcoran, Shark Tank Most people are disengaged with their work and feel uninspired, underappreciated and underpaid. The situation could hardly be clearer: in the wake of a catastrophic global health crisis and amid societal upheaval and economic uncertainty, we can longer afford to play by the conventional rulebook to get ahead in our professional lives. What’s the secret to this kind of success in today’s world? Ironically, it’s honoring our ancient instincts and intuition. It’s about sensing danger and pouncing on opportunity -- as our ancestors did tens of thousands of years ago, or in the manner of playful kids full of curiosity and can-do spirit. Primitive is very different from the familiar, cookie-cutter business book. Marco Greenberg, a close advisor to visionary founders of tech unicorns and the heads of some of the nation’s largest organizations, demonstrates how a range of successful people--those he calls "primitives"--ignore what they "should" do and instead tap a primal drive to power ahead. The good news is that anyone looking to inspire others has a way to apply the primitive mindset, from new college grads to mid-career professionals, from HR directors to CEOs. The key is to go ROAMING ™: be Relentless in pursuing our biggest goals; have the courage to reject group-think and be Oppositional; choose an Agnostic approach rather than overly specialize; adopt a Messianic spirit, so your work becomes not just a job but a true calling; embrace the advantages of being Insecure rather than feign bravado; reap the benefits of sometimes acting a little Nuts; and finally, to realize that being Gallant in following one's passions delivers the ultimate rewards. Primitive captures the keys to breakout success and professional satisfaction.

Body Style reveals the subcultural body as a site for understanding subcultural identity, resistance, agency, and fashion. Analyzed, theorized, politicized, and sensationalized, the subcultural body functions as a framework where individuals build a sense of self and subcultural identity. Drawing on specific subcultural examples and interviews with members, Body Style explores the subcultural body and its style within global culture. Body Style is the result of over twelve years of research examining these intersections within specific urban subcultures, including Urban Tribals, Modern Primitives, Punks, Cybers, Industrials, Skaters, and others. Divided into three main sections on subcultural body history, subcultural body identity and subcultural body styles, this book will be of particular interest to students of dress and fashion as well as those coming to subculture from sociology and cultural studies.

This fascinating collection explores the growing range of body modification practices such as piercing, tattooing, branding, cutting and inserting implants, which have sprung up recently in the West. It asks whether this implies that we are returning to traditional tribal practices of inscribing identities onto bodies on the part of 'modern primitives', or is body modification better understood as purely cosmetic and decorative with body markings merely temporary signs of transferable loyalties? Contributors address the question of the permanence of body transformation through fitness regimes and body building; look at the French performance artist Orlan and the Australian performance artist Stelarc who explored Western standard o
